Add a downward expander feature

My band recently added a drummer to the lineup which is proving problematic when live multitrack recording with our CQ18T due to cymbal spill into the vocal mics. I understand we can use gates and even try and baffle the cymbals, however, considering noise gates already exist and the leap from gate to downward expander by all accounts isn’t huge, perhaps such a feature could be implemented without too much difficulty. I’m thinking an expander would give a better result. Cheers.

It wont solve your problem but if you leave out your overhead mics and lern to live with the spill by

EQing out some high end out of your tom and vocal mic channels should help a lot .
Only try doing at sound chec not show time

Also try not to have the rear of the vox mics pointing directly towards the cymbals.
offsetting angles will help here.

There will be enough cymbals in all of the open mics in a small room without overheads.

Large rooms mic overhead and apply eq cuts in vox and tom mics
Gates can be hard work

……sound advice, thank you. Will experiment with that. Wouldn’t hurt to have an expander though.

Please do
Also remember to apply low shelf cut in then eq as required in vocal channels the vocal should sound more focused
