With more performers using IEM, a few more aux mixes would be welcome. Ideally, there would be two stereo groups (as on QU) that could be assigned to the headphone outputs. Wouldn’t need the full complement of output processing. PEQ and limiter would be nice. GEQ and FBA aren’t necessary. If processing capacity is an issue, this would still be a useful feature even if there was no output EQ or limiting.
I am no expert, but I suspect that this would need two more busses and that it is a hardware limitation. Happy to be corrected though.
It would require more busses. Ideally 4 (2 x stereo). My understanding is that mixing and signal routing is not as hungry for digital processing capacity as things like EQ and dynamics. Maybe there’s enough extra capacity to do it, maybe not. I’m just making the suggestion. A&H have to decide if it should and can be done.
Just for your information regarding the chances:
Keith from A&H wrote about this topic elsewhere about a year ago:
But A&H also promised to keep us informed if something proved absolutely impossible.
Therefore, it’s also possible that the situation has changed in the meantime.
The number of auxes being lower then on touchmix 16 was suprising as if anything should have more being that more people use iems and are plenty that prefer stereo iem mixes.
It would be great if they release a new larger cq model with more outputs(and some more inputs). If they release generation 2 of the existing ones maybe they can just add some additional outputs.
If i were to design a larger version
-24 inputs
-8 mono aux’s (8 xlr outs, can be paired to become stereo mixes)
-4 stereo aux’s (4 x 1/4 trs balanced outs).
Plenty of great suggestions of general improvements on cq series example things like
-deeser’s at channel level that can be used on whatever channel(s) needed
-channel gates option to switch to pse mode
-add add a low pass filter(hi cut) on channel (and output) parametric eq’s or instead an extra band of parametric that can be set as low pass filter for more flexibility.
-at least a few subgroups
Hopefully it’s not too cheeky to say, but we do actually make a mixer that meets nearly all those requirements and then some - it’s called Qu! ![]()
That is a fair point. The new QU series does have impressive upgrades over original version and does have more outputs, features and flexibility over the cq series. No rack version yet from the new generation QU but there is the SQ rack.
CQ series comes in a very convenient form factor for some use cases. Originally i thought CQ was intended to compete directly with QSC touchmix series(now discontinued). The better touchscreen, preamp gain control design are a few of things that are worlds better the then the touchmix mixers. Having less aux outs, no channel dessers, less eq bands/no low pass filter vs touchmix digital mixer released in 2014 was disappointing but granted not everyone needs or cares about those things. Smaller bands especially where most everyone was good with mono iems the 6 mono aux’s would be enough and clearly there are other mixer models offered by A&H like the QU and SQ with more.
