Hi, is it ok to run 100m max run from the network port of the mixing desk to a stage router and control the desk from an ipad? i have been doing this for a while in marquees where the dining marquee is separate from the dance marquee and i run the sound system from an ipad in the dining tent then use the desk for the evening entertainment. Only reason i’m asking this is because i’ve been doing it this way for a while but my Avantis keep’s freezing and i end up pulling the desk out and swapping it for one of my SQ desks. i’m cluthcing at straws as to what it is and Audio Technica last report was “Removed, cleaned and reseated DSP FX card which was absolutely pitted in dust as advised by A&H”. I have lost faith in the desk as i have it out in the warehouse and its functioning fine but it seems as soon as i take it out onsite for a job the desk just ends up freezing and me resorting to carrying round an SQ for backup!
That could be a misconfigured network (the router?). The freezes indicate that the network bandwidth is maxed out from time to time. The desk is sending metering data as a continuous stream, maybe the router can’t handle that.
Why such a long run to plug the console into the network? (Although it shouldn’t be a problem to run that far). Personally I would create your own network using a travel router like the GL-iNet Opal right at the console. The beauty of these devices is that you can create a private network (with WiFi) for your use, while also connecting (via a hardwired or a WiFi connection) to a facility’s network for internet, etc. Most consumer devices won’t let you create your own private WiFi network while at the same time also connecting to another existing WiFi network, but these devices do.
Also, does the desk freeze when it is not connected to the network? An issue with the network (a duplicate IP address, etc) can definitely cause severe slow downs and hard freezes on these consoles.
Long story short, I think your freezing issues are probably network related.
So I only put 100m as I run them on cordial cat 5/6 reel but they’re normally 70m reels. I just thought I’d run out the fact of running the network over a long distance.
Everytime the desk has frozen it has a DX4816 and a DX168 expander connected to it along with the network, when when it does freeze I swap out for a SQ running exactly the same stage boxes and network and it’s absolutely fine so surely if it was a network issue it would crash the SQ aswell?
So I basically run the main stage on local inputs and dx4816 stage box, then run 2 x cat 5 reels into the different area and run the dx168 on the one reel and the network router sat with it connected via the second cat 5 reel to give me the control via the iPad mic app.
Well obviously router connected to network port and stage boxes in s- link. DHCP on for network config! I check for network traffic and set router to a channel which doesn’t have much traffic on
My main question was about running a router over a network cable over long distances that was all, I was just curious as my SQ6 and SQ7 never run into these problem neither does my DM7 and DM7 compact and they all run this way absolute fine!
I can’t imagine a situation where a network problem would cause the entire console to crash and stop passing audio. Certainly network issues can cause slowdowns and even freezes with the GUI, but I can’t say I’ve heard of a situation where it causes the console to crash.
Therefore I think there is a different issue going on with your Avantis. I would suggest that you reach out to your supplier as well as the official A&H support group. You can enter a ticket with the official support group on the main A&H website. I think they are going to be better able to troubleshoot this problem with you than we can.
