CQ-12T – Route Mic to USB for MS Teams Without Sending to Main LR

Hi everyone,

I’m using an Allen & Heath CQ-12T and need help with routing. My setup includes:

Mic: Earthworks ETHOS on Channel 1 or 2
Speakers: Neumann KH 120 II, connected to Main LR (XLR Output)
MacM4: Connected via USB
Application: Microsoft Teams

I can’t find a way to remove Channel 1/2 (ETHOS mic) from Main LR while keeping it available over USB (sound that is coming from Mac). Since CQ doesn’t have the same routing flexibility as SQ, I’m not sure how to achieve this or if is possible at the end.

What’s the correct way to:

Prevent ETHOS mic from going to Main LR
Send ETHOS mic to USB for Teams (Channel 1/2)
Still allow Mac audio to play through Main LR

Thanks in advance for any guidance!
Daniel

Doesn’t the following work?

Set in MainLR Mix your channel faders 1/2 to inf.

Set Mix 1/2 to Pre Fader and and level there your mic as needed for USB.

Level in Mix MainLR your Mac audio as needed for your speakers.

Thank you for your response. I have little experience, and I couldn’t manage to reproduce what you suggested. I can’t really find how to route the microphone in such a way that it doesn’t go to the Main (in my case, the studio monitors). I initially tried to route it to Output 1 (where I have nothing connected), but I wasn’t successful. The idea of hearing everything from the laptop in the monitors but not myself when I speak didn’t work out. I’ll keep trying.

In the mix “Main LR” set or leave the faders of the microphone channels (1/2) set to infinity (down).

Please also read in your manual e.g. the following:

Maybe this video on MS Teams will help you, but I’m afraid it’s already too complex for you:

Thank you once again. The most important thing is that what I want is possible with the CQ-12T. If it’s possible and it’s just a matter of time until I figure out how to do it, then everything is okay.

In TotalMix FX (using a Babyface Pro FS), I’m very close to getting it right. I’m going to use the same logic on CQ-12T. Somehow (on Allen), if I lower the fader that sends Ethos to Main Out, the microphone is no longer heard in Teams. At some point, I’ll figure it out.

However, what bothers me the most is that the CQ-12T often freezes (being connected via USB to a Mac M4), and the only fix is a restart. I haven’t had any issues with other audio interfaces. I read that I’ am not alone in that problem.

Back to my “problem” - maybe I should stop using Main Out (where I have two monitors connected) and route the sound from the Mac to another pair of TRS outputs instead.

Any way, thanks for the Youtube video. Quite interesting.

Hard to test with the AH CQ-12T since the USB connection constantly freezes. I managed to solve everything perfectly by routing the Main Out from AH to the RME (TRS Input). Somehow, TotalMix feels more intuitive—at least for me. I’m sure the same things could be done without the RME, but for now, the AH CQ-12T is a disaster when it comes to USB connectivity. I’ve decided to use it only as a DSP.

SQUser - Thanks for all support.

Set up a dedicated PRE FADE mix for the send.

Thanks, mikec. One of the two videos (send by SQuser) describes something very similar. The problem is that I’m losing patience with how the CQ-12T works via USB. In order to send the sound (mic) to Teams but not hear it in the Main Out (monitors), is clear that I need a Pre-Fader mix - independent from the main volume.

Hi.
Not visited the forum for a while and just picked your thread up.
Ran some quick tests on my CQ20B which is connected to a Mac when at home.
Mac is running Logic pro X for these tests.
So I got a mic connected to an input channel (any will actually do) and once setup and output thru main LR, I dropped the channel slider to Off.
The channel VU meter is still showing a signal of course, controlled by the channel input gain.
So over to the Logic on Mac.
I created an Aggregate for this test comprising the CQ and the Built in output of the Mac (Namely listening thru the headphone socket)
In logic prefs/audio, I set Cq as input device and Built in as output.
I created a channel in logic, assigned the CQ channel for input source, tapped the input monitor channel switch and there is the signal. Finally routing the output side to the Built in and focal was in my headphones.
So, it is possible to output thru the USB without raining the channel volume as this is how you record multitracks anyway direct on a computer. As long as there is no return signal to the usb output back to the CQ you wont hear that input thro the speakers connecte to the XLR sockets.
I have no experience with MS Teams Im afraid but maybe this with give you guidance hon how to route on the Mac. There is no routing facility on the CQ but it is not required for this purpose, just make sure the computer is set up for CQ in and computer out.
Regards,
Rob.
