Dynamic Mic Auto-Gain Not Working

Hello,

I just bought a CQ20B and plugged in a dynamic Mic (SE Electronics V7) into input 10 XLR and was surprised to see no signal.

Tried Auto Gain.. nothing.
Tried turning up the gain manually.. nothing.

Plugged the cable into an audio interface and saw lots of signal coming through loud and clear.

After a lot of messing about and worrying I tried plugging the mic into input 5 on the top row.

Same thing with Auto-Gain, but then I noticed if I manually crank the gain way up it works.

This seems strange to me. Am I doing something wrong? Shouldn’t the Auto-Gain work with a dynamic Mic?

I have used it with dynamic and condenser mics, keys, output from amp modeler, etc. The only time I have a problem is when I do not have the right channel selected when I use the auto-gain.

Well fortunately I’m not that stupid just yet, though getting older of course - lol. It works fine with a condenser Mic.

After I posted this I noticed that there are other posts mentioning the same thing.

People were hypothesizing that the AGC might require a minimum level of signal to operate. But that in itself seems bizarre.

In another post that I found. Keith had dropped in saying that the combo jack inputs have 20dBs of padding built in, whereas the straight XLR jacks do not.

That would explain the result on input 10 I guess and why input 5 is better.

I mean, the thing is that it works - you just can’t use AGC, which is a big selling point of the mixer that you can Mic up a band and do AGC across all the inputs simultaneously.

It seems like a bug to me. I’m on the latest firmware of course, and yes I tried different cables.

Just for your information.
The -20 dB is only active when using the TRS jack of the combo jacks, and of course not when using XLR.

So, it shouldn’t really make a difference whether you use input 10 or 5, as long as you use XLR cables.

Did you test the AG feature with another mic ?
Just to eliminate possible CQ failure.

Maybe the Hi-z is enabled - CQ20B how to use hi-z inputs

In my opinion, HI-Z can only be applied to inputs 15 and 16, and not to 5 and 10.
