External Hard Drive Write Speed for 96k Multi Tracking

This may have been asked in the past, but I couldn’t find this by searching. Anyone know what the recommended write speed is for SQ multitracking at 96k? Waiting on my SQ Rack and want to make sure I get the correct external hard drive.

Just get a samsung T7 or better  no worries

Thanks for the info!

We record to an internal secondary drive (not our OS drive) without any issues. It’s an “old” style 7200rpm platter hard drive - certainly nothing fancy.

Strangely enough, if I try to record directly to my computer’s OS drive (which is an SSD drive), I get audio glitches in my recordings similar to what you would hear if you had a clocking issue. But as long as I record to the secondary drive (which is actually slower than the OS drive), then I don’t get any audio glitches.

Edit - this is with Reaper.

I am looking for a portable drive to record straight off the usb port.

The SQ uses a USB 2.0 port. As such, paying extra money for a faster SSD or NVME harddrive is pointless. Of course you might want the robustness of a SSD drive if you plan on traveling with the drive, but don’t buy it for the “speed” factor.

Got it! Thanks. We do travel so I will be looking for a tank.

96 kHz, 24 bit, 32 tracks is 74 Mbit/second so is the minimum required:
96000 x 24 x 32

(A Mbit is normally 1000000 bits, not 1048576)

Months ago I walked into Best Buy and bought the 1TB Samsung “Portable SSD T9” Model MU-PG1T0B. I plug it into the USB drive on the front of the S5, and have recorded many shows in mutltitrack. I always format the drive on the SQ just before using it. I have also found that this drive works great in moving settings from one ME-1 to another.

Awesome! Thanks for the information.
