FBA on Input Channels for DJs

I’m a DJ using the CQ-18T (purchased a few weeks ago) as an external mixer in a rack for my setup, and I’ve been really impressed with its capabilities so far. However, I wanted to suggest a potential improvement.

Would it be possible to give users the option to apply the Feedback Assistance (FBA) on individual mic channels before they are routed to the Main LR? Currently, with the FBA acting at the Main LR stage, it notches out frequencies that affect the entire mix. This includes the music coming from my DJ controller routed through the CQ-18T.

Having the FBA applied at the mic channel level would allow feedback frequencies to be managed without impacting the overall music from the Main LR output. This feature would be a big win for DJs.

If this isn’t limited by the hardware, I’d love to see it in a future firmware update! Thanks for all the great work on the CQ-18T so far.

I support this idea. I use CQ-12T for live jazz gigs, and would like to be able to use condenser mic for clarinet (more sensitive and subject to feedback).
I guess current FBA feature on Main LR is intended to address acoustics of the venue, but given each mic (frequency response, sensitivity and placement) is going to trigger its own resonances, it would be great to have this feature on a per-input basis as well.
Is the current design perhaps limited by resources (each input has 4 band parametric equaliser, whereas FBA has 16)?

@PaulH you are correct in your suspicion.

The reason you can switch between use of the FBA+PEQ and GEQ on the outputs of the CQ is because they use the same processing.
It’s no coincidence that there are 16 filters in the FBA plus 4 bands in the PEQ and then 20 bands in the GEQ.
So the processing does not exist in input channels for the FBA to be used there.

Thanks,
Keith.

@KeithJ A&H Thanks for the feedback - much appreciated.

How would this be as a workaround?
Connect condenser mic to Input 1 (CQ-12T) (aim is to apply FBA only on this one channel)
Route Input 1 to Output 1 only (using Fader)
Use TRS/TRS patch lead to loop Output 1 back to Input 6
Run FBA on Output 1

Mic → Input 1 → Output 1 (with FBA) → Input 6 → Main LR (etc.)

I saw someone recommend this on YouTube as well. I will give it a try within the next week.

Yes, also suggested that approach 2 months ago I this forum. It’s a workaround for creating submixes, BTW. Would be great, if such routing could be done internally, but that would add latency and feedback issues, I guess?
