SD Multitrack Overdub Mode – Layer-by-Layer Recording Without a DAW or Computer

I would like to propose a feature that I think could significantly extend the value of the CQ series for solo musicians, home recording enthusiasts, and worship teams with limited setup resources: a standalone overdub recording mode using the SD card.

The core idea

The CQ already records multitrack audio to SD via LiveTrax. What I am proposing goes one step further: allowing the CQ to simultaneously record new channels while playing back previously recorded tracks from the same SD session — all without requiring a computer or external DAW.

In practice, the workflow would look like this:

  1. Record drums and bass on channels 1–4 → saved to SD
  2. On the next pass, play back those tracks through the mixer while recording guitars on channels 5–6 → all tracks accumulate in the same session
  3. Continue layering: keys, then vocals, then whatever is needed

Each pass benefits from the CQ’s built-in processing: EQ, compression, effects (reverb, delay, etc.) applied in real time during both recording and playback.

Why this matters

This is essentially a simplified multitrack looper — not for live looping, but for structured song building. It addresses a real need for:

  • Solo musicians who cannot record all instruments simultaneously
  • Small worship teams or rehearsal environments doing demo/mockup recordings
  • Educators and students building arrangements layer by layer
  • Anyone who wants a minimal setup without a laptop, audio interface, or DAW

The key value proposition is that the CQ already has everything needed: multitrack I/O, SD recording, built-in effects, and a clean preamp stage. This feature would not require new hardware — only a firmware update that enables simultaneous SD playback and record within the same session.

Scope and limitations (realistic expectations)

I am not proposing that the CQ replace a full DAW. The feature would intentionally be simple:

  • No non-destructive editing, no clip-based timeline
  • No tempo grid or MIDI sequencing
  • Processing limited to what the CQ already offers internally
  • Sync based on a fixed session start point

Think of it as a standalone sketch pad — good enough for demos and arrangements, without the overhead of setting up a full recording environment.

I would be very interested to know whether this is technically feasible given the current SD and DSP architecture of the CQ, and whether there is interest from other users in this direction.

Personally if I was an artist creating music, I would want to use a more reliable medium than an SD card to save my work on.

You make it sound like there is a tremendous amount of work to set up a DAW. You literally can plug your laptop into the console over USB, open the DAW app and hit record. It honestly probably takes less effort to do that than mess around with an SD card, navigate to the correct menu in the CQ, and press record there.

I’m fairly new to music production, and I don’t have a DAW set up right now. What I like about the CQ is that its presets and built-in processing already give me a decent, usable sound without needing to configure gain staging, compression and EQ from scratch.

The feature I proposed came from a real, concrete situation: I actually tried to build a layered song using only the CQ — record drums and bass first, then guitars, then vocals — and hit this limitation directly. The idea isn’t theoretical; it’s something I attempted and couldn’t finish because the hardware doesn’t currently support simultaneous SD playback and record within the same session.

For someone in my position, that standalone overdub capability would mean a complete creative workflow without any external device: layer the takes on the CQ, record the post-processed stereo mix directly to SD as a quick demo, and optionally export the individual stems later for further mixing. Simple, self-contained, no DAW expertise required at any step.

And this isn’t a far-fetched request. Zoom’s LiveTrak series already does exactly this. The L-12, L-20, and the recently released L-6max all support native overdub mode directly to SD card — no computer needed. The L-6max even features unlimited overdubbing with a dedicated bounce track that frees up channels to keep adding layers, while preserving all individual tracks on the SD for future mixing. If Zoom has implemented this across their entire LiveTrak line, it confirms there is real market demand for this kind of standalone workflow.

The CQ-20B has the hardware to support it. It just needs the firmware.
