While the ganged stereo channels and numerous stereo modes on the SQ are certainly convenient, the handling of gain for the L/R channels individually has some quirks that could be improved upon, and the details of the mid/side decode could be better documented.
For the gain on stereo channels, having individual gains for each side of the stereo on the preamp screen would be very helpful, especially if they are gangable. This would make it much easier to handle the cases where the different sides of the stereo pair require different preamp settings (e.g. for mid/side with non-matched microphones, or for dealing with a source with a one-legged cable that has one side 6dB louder than the other side). It also resolves the (not documented as far as I could find) question on if the gains are changed when sockets with mismatched gains are made into a stereo pair, or if any gain differences are retained (which can be a problem if the gains weren’t reset prior to patching/configuring channels, and may not be evident that it is the case). There’s a suggestion in the manual that the individual socket settings (including gain) can be adjusted from the IO page in at least the 1.6 series of firmware, but I haven’t had a chance to see how that functions, and at any rate, it’s screen diving some distance from the channel configuration screen.
For the mid/side decode, it would be helpful to document what gain settings are applied at the “100% stereo” setting. If that setting is that mid and side have equal gain, then having the option to push the gain of the side above the gain of the mid (for a wider stereo image, even into the realm of “hole in the middle” with essentially no mid component) is a feature request.
