48v master switch?

Is there a way to add a 48v kill switch to the soft key list? I would like to switch off phantom with one button instead of having to race to switch off every channel before some stagehand or tech starts unplugging expensive 48v mics from their xlr’s. I imagine it would need a confirmation step as well and maybe staggered over a few banks at a time or sequenced.

YMMV, but I just turn off my SQ before anyone has a chance to unplug any mics. You might not be able to do that (walk out music or some other thing) so you suggestion is not a bad one.

D.

What would be the reason to have the phantom power switch off, to unplug the mics?
Loud popping? You can avoid this by muting the inputs.

You never unplug a phantom mic with the phantom on. Standard procedure

Why?
Sometimes it just happens…

Can’t say I have ever heard that before, and I have been dealing with hundreds of touring engineers with various levels of mics.

I know you shouldn’t if you are using any sort of jack style patchbay since contacts can short, but with an XLR there is no way for the contacts to cross.

I’m going to have to look further into this, as this is the first time I have ever heard anyone mention it.

I think most modern condenser mics can handle hot swaps. There is certainly lore suggesting otherwise, maybe from older ribbon mics. I never turn off phantom with my earthworks SR117, SM81, e901, etc. Mute yes, except when I forget. . .POP!

I could see an exposed master 48v kill switch being an issue with an accidental bump during a show.

Maybe build a scene for your show with everything blocked except the pre amp, one scene 48v on one scene with it off.

For a few annual shows with a fair amount of condenser mics the scene file for those is saved with the 48v off.

I have gigs with 2-3 bands a day, and this method would be best because only selected mics are switched. The singer always brings their own mic, and the drum kit (including overheads and hi-hat) is always the same and doesn’t need to be switched. Plus, you can quickly change the ganging list. Maybe an idea for the next update.
