AHM-16 forced firmware update

We have installed various AHM-16/AHM-32.
I went back to our customer with the intention to make a small adjustment in his Audio Setup.

After connecting the AHM-16 to my PC, I was forced to perform the firmware update of the AHM-16.

There was no way to backup the existing set-up of the AHM-16 before the update and
the existing set-up would have been erased.

So I had to go back again to our office and fetch that back-up file.

  • How can you backup the existing set-up of the AHM-16 before the update?

Was it that your AHM software was newer than the device’s firmware?

Normally the two versions have to match and if you had a newer software version on your computer, it would likely inform you that you had to upgrade the AHM firmware to match. I suspect you really could have just gone back to an older version of the software on your computer however (that matched the existing firmware version in the AHM device). Although I haven’t used the AHM software, I can have different versions of the Avantis Director installed on my computer at the same time just for this purpose. I suspect the AHM software works the same way.

Of course I could also be completely off base here and this wasn’t what happened at all!

Yes, I had a newer software version on your computer, it informed me that I had to upgrade the AHM firmware to match AND then all the settings of the AHM were gone…

That is what I thought.

Regardless of what the system was telling you, IMHO the best way to handle this would be to install/use the older version of the AHM software on your laptop. (Whatever software version matched the firmware on the AHM system).

This would have allowed you to connect to the AHM without updating the device’s firmware. You could have then downloaded the setup/show file (I’m not sure if the AHM calls it a show file or not) to your computer if you wanted to update the firmware while you were there. Once you backed up the settings/show file on your laptop, you could safely update the firmware. Once the firmware update was completed you could have taken the setup/show file that you saved at the beginning of the process on your laptop to “restore” the AHM to the correct settings.

I know this post is long and potentially confusing. Hopefully my suggestion made sense. Long story short, you “lost” the settings because you updated the firmware version on the AHM without having the settings/show file in your possession. You really didn’t have to update the firmware to connect to the unit however. You could have used the older software version to connect to it instead.

From firmware V1.43, we added an option to restore the current Config automatically when updating firmware.
