Hi,
Considering getting an AHM16 as a system processor and was curious about the connection options I have.
Desk is Avantis, stageboxes are a GX4816 and one dx port is connected to a DX168.
Can I use either the other DX port on the 4816 or the cascade out on the 168 to connect to the slink port on the AHM and feed the inputs digitally? Or would I need an add in card in the Avantis to run a separate line to the AHM?
Thanks.
First, there is no SLink port on the AHM-16 (or AHM-32). There is a network port, but that is just for regular network traffic and it will not pass audio between devices. Only the AHM-64 has a built in SLink port. Second, you cannot connect a stagebox to two different consoles like you are suggesting.
Therefore, to tie the Avantis console to the AHM processor via a digital connection, you have two basic choices. One is to use a GigaAce connection between the two units. This would require a GigaAce card in the Avantis and an SLink card in the AHM-16 or AHM-32. If you ended up with an AHM-64, then you could use the built in SLink port.
The other option is to use Dante, Waves, or Madi as your connection vehicle. This is probably the easiest/cheapest method if you already have a Dante, Waves, or Madi card in the Avantis because you would add a matching card in the AHM-16 and routing the audio between the two devices using that third party protocol.
EDIT - obviously there is also another choice which is just to use analog connections between the two devices. You can take your analog outputs from the Avantis and route them into the analog inputs of the AHM system. This has it’s advantages (mainly that it is cheap and easy to set up), but also disadvantages (such as slightly longer latency because of the added A/D conversions, as well as less flexibility than a digital connection offers).
Ah my mistake I didn’t realise the 64 was the only one with a built in s link port.
The original plan was to use digital ins with the Avantis which would be house console, and then use the 8 analog ins for 2 guest consoles (LRSF x2).
Guess I’ll have to go the gigaAce and slink route if I want a digital connection.
Thanks for your help.
