Avantis and 2 Dx16/08

Hi,

I have an avantis and i want to connect 2 Dx16 on it. If i start to the slink port on the console goes to the port A on the first DX16 switch on cascade and go from the DX16 (1) to the second can be automaticly patch the input 17,18,19,20….. ? or i have to do something to have 32 input ?

The DX protocol is broken into blocks of 32. A&H has decided to use these blocks of 32 when automatically assigning I/O. Honestly it is the correct way to do it.

This way, if you cascade a second DX box on another DX box, the second boxes inputs and outputs will ALWAYS start at input 33 and output 33. It doesn’t matter how many inputs and outputs the first box had which will obviously change depending on the model of DX box used for the first box.

If the system didn’t do this, it would be even more confusing IMHO. For example, if one day you used a DX168 for the first box and the inputs for the second box were automatically assigned to start at input 17 and then you switched out the first box for a DX012 and suddenly the inputs for the second box started at input 1 (because the DX012 has no inputs itself), that would be super confusing and would actually cause the system to stop passing audio until someone manually reassigned all the sources that used the second boxe’s I/O to the “updated” I/O assignments.

So when you cascade to DX boxes together, the first box will always have it’s I/O start with input/output #1. The second box will always have it’s I/O start with input and output #33. All of the inputs and outputs on both DX boxes will be available in the system, but you will need to assign the I/O appropriately and use DX inputs 1-16 for the first DX168 box and DX inputs 33-48 for the second DX168 box.

  • your first DX will be inputs 1-16 and outputs 1-8
  • your second DX will be inputs 33 - 48 and outputs 33 - 40

I have some difficulties to understand because if I look to the manual we can see it’s the first DX input 1 to 16 and the second 17 to 32 in cascade mode so why it’s gonna be input 33?.. But maybe if it’s the fact, I can imagine I have juste to go to the i/o port section and repatch to input 1 to 32 and output 1 to 16, right?

Now I am questioning my knowledge! It’s been so long since I’ve daisy chained two DX boxes together that perhaps I’m confusing the cascade and non-cascade modes!

I would assume the DX GX System guide is correct (and therefore my previous explanation is wrong). That being said, I think if you set up the two boxes the way you want and connect them to the console, it will be fairly easy to tell which inputs and outputs both DX boxes are assigned to using the console’s routing tab. By using the routing tab, you will be able to see all of the possible sources all at one time and the connected I/O will look/appear different than missing/disconnected I/O. If inputs 1-32 look connected, then you know the first box is inputs 1-16 and the second box is inputs 17-32, etc. If inputs 1-16 look connected, 17-32 don’t look connected, and 33-48 look connected, then you know the second box is really assigned to inputs 33-48.

Sure i will try tomorow because i recieve them and i will give you back my info but in the logic side the first have to be 1 to 16 and the seconde 17-32 it’s more nominal like that so i will have to be fixed tomorow.

So, I got the answer after testing it: when connecting two DX units in cascade, the inputs are from 1 to 16 and from 17 to 32, and the outputs are from 1 to 8 and from 17 to 24. So, it works exactly as stated in the manual. Of course, you can repatch the outputs, but they will still remain between 17 and 24 on the I/O page.

First box is 1 to 16 and second one is 17 to 32.
Outputs are 1 to 8 and 17 to 24.

Make sure to connect the S-Link to the DX in A on the first DX168.

It is not, that information was wrong.

BTW, you can assign any socket to any input strip, but I guess you know this already.

It’s right now, it’s like input 1 to 16 and 17 to32 and output 1 to 8 and 17 to 24
