Best Practices for Managing Scene Transitions on SQ-6 for Live Performances

Hi everyone,

I’m a live sound engineer using an SQ-6 (firmware V1.6) for mid-sized venue gigs, typically with 20-24 input channels and multiple monitor mixes. I’m looking to optimize my scene management for seamless transitions between songs and acts during live performances. Specifically, I’m interested in best practices for handling scene recalls without audible glitches or delays, especially when switching between complex setups (e.g., different EQs, compressor settings, and FX sends).

I’ve been using scene filters to isolate parameters, but I’ve noticed occasional issues with parameters not recalling as expected, possibly due to filter misconfigurations. Could anyone share their workflow for organizing scenes effectively on the SQ series? For example:

How do you structure your scene filters to balance flexibility and reliability?

Any tips for minimizing recall times or avoiding glitches during transitions?

Are there specific parameters you avoid including in scene recalls to prevent issues?

I’d appreciate any insights, workflows, or lessons learned from your experiences with the SQ-6 or similar models in live settings. Thanks in advance for your input!

You probably want to explore the use of “scene crossfades” (page 70 of the reference manual). This setting allows you to set the time it takes for the system to change the audio setting from one scene to another instead of those changes being instantaneous. By using crossfades, you help prevent any “jarring” audio that comes from hearing an abrupt scene change.
