Hey, trying to get my wings system off the ground.
Can someone please advise if it is possible to set one of the buttons above the faders on the IP8 to be channel select? I have managed to make them Mute and pafl but I think Mute and channel Select would be more useful for my set up.
There is a setting Sel Follows PAFL, but this is in the Surface area and so works on my Dieector touch screen but not seem to translate to the IP8s.
Also is it possible to rearrange windows in Diectors Main window? In my test set up I have resorted to using a S5000 surface in Director as at least it gives me 2 x banks of 8 faders which I can mirror on my 2 x IP8s. But it would be much better to be able to customise the layout.
Finally does anyone know if there is a guide somewhere which has a brief explanation of the menu options for the ip8 buttons in director when using Director with a dlive?
Maybe you know this, but the IP controllers can connect either to the Mix Rack (Mix Rack → Controllers), or to a Surface (Surface → Controllers).
If an IP controller connects to a Mix Rack, it acts like a mini-Surface with a limited feature set. Each control maps directly to a Mix Rack parameter like fader level for a particular channel. In this case, The Select function is not available, because by themselves the IP controllers do not have the concept of a selected channel (they do not have an EQ control section, etc.).
If an IP controller is connected to a surface, it acts like an extension of the surface. Since the Surface does have a concept of a selected channel, buttons on the IP controller can be programmed as “Sel” and will be linked to the Surfaces selected channel parameter.
It sounds to me like you may be using an IP8 and Director without a physical surface. In this case, Director connects to the Mix Rack and acts like a Surface. If you then configure the IP8 in the Surface → Controllers section, it will act as an extension of Director, and you should be able to set up “Sel” buttons that will control Director’s selected channel parameter.
I’m actually trying to configure my IP8 to do something similar for an upcoming job - sadly I couldn’t get the referenced Show File to import correctly in Director thus far, but I plan to keep playing with it. Hope this helps!
MSTEEL: Thank you so much for your fantastic explanation of how to get channel select working. It made such sense, even an oldie like me understood and I now have channel select working on my IP8s and the whole mobile set up now seems like it should actually be fairly good using just a single screen. Sends on faders would make it great but still I think it should function quite well. I know people have been able to get the sends on faders working through having multiple screens and safe-ing particular functions and i have actually been able to get this working but when I have shows with 6 different random bands in a night all with 15 min turn overs I just feel this is way to complex. But none the less it’s now a working usable system and I thank you for this!
Still can’t wrap my head on how do I program SoF on the IP8 while connected to the mixrack for a wing fly rack. Is anyone free to send a simplified showfile on how do I create just 1 SoF on the Ip-8 to get started?
There are several different ways to select and control the send levels of a specific aux mix with an IP8. This is how I do it, but it is not the only way to set it up.
You can assign each fader on the IP units to control the main channel fader level or an aux send level. It’s all in the menu choices available when you are programming each fader. I tend not to use the SEL (ie the select button) mechanism for mixing aux send levels (SoF). Instead I program the entire IP8 unit to control a single aux mix (by selecting a specific aux mix during my initial programming or the IP device). I then save a scene and set a recall filter to “safe” everything except this particular IP8’s settings. Now I can reprogram the IP8 to control a different aux and save a different scene (with recall filters set) with those settings. I keep “rinsing and repeating” this process until I have all of the aux sends programmed in and saved as unique scenes.
Now you just need a method to recall the appropriate scene when you want the IP8 to control a specific aux mix. There are lots of ways of doing this. You can recall these scenes by programming the buttons on the IP8 itself to recall a specific scene (which is great for a “stand alone” IP8 where I want to control Aux sends without any other additional software/device needed). You can also programming user defined keys on the Surface/Director software to recall a specific scene. You could even use an external device like a Streamdeck sitting next to the IP8 to recall these scenes and change the Aux mix that the IP8 is going to control. I’m sure there are other methods of recalling scenes too, but these are all methods I have used to recall my “IP8 aux scenes”.
Hopefully that all makes sense. Once you grasp the concept of using scenes to make drastic changes to how an IP unit is programmed - and then use those scenes to recall the different functionality as needed - it really opens up the doors to “what is possible” when it comes to the functionality of IP devices.
PS - Why do I set it up like this? For one, we let our musicians control their own aux mix using various IP devices. Most musicians have their own dedicated IP device, but there are times when I want several musicians to share a device (background singers for example). In those cases, I have the buttons at the top of the IP unit programmed to recall a different scene for each mix and have them labeled correctly. So singer 1 knows they press the “Singer 1” button at the top of the device before making changes to their mix. The system recalls the singer 1 scene and sets the IP controller to adjust their mix. Then singer 2 can reach over, press the “Singer 2” button and control their mix (because the IP devices is changed to control the singer 2 aux mix via the scene change). It works remarkably well.
