and not Cardi B’s WAP as hers is not compact. lol
I recently sold a customer a CQ12. My error, I assumed it had built in wifi like our shop CQ18’s.
In the interim I loaned him a router, but promised to research a compact access point, preferably a dongle type piece that would plug into the network port and possibly be powered POE. Does the ethernet port provide POE and does anyone know of a simple compact access point as described? Range is not important.
Cheers. BJ
Great post - I also completely missed the finer detail that the CQ12 doesn’t have WiFi. Obvious with hindsight. I bought a GL.iNet router for ~$50 for a different purpose but it seems like a good option for the CQ12. Opal (GL-SFT1200) Gigabit Wireless Router | AC1200 | OpenWrt | Pocket-sized | VPN — GL.iNet
I’ve had this one for many years, & bought it to use with my old Mackie DL16S when the wireless would frequently crap out. TL-WR902AC | AC750 Wireless Travel Router | TP-Link
I recently got a Ubiquiti UK-Ultra WAP to use with my CQ12-T. I attached a 5/8-27 female threaded adapter so that I can mount it on a mic stand. It’s compact, rugged and good looking. Range is excellent. You do need a PoE injector to power it. In short, I love it.

Can +1 for this device.
I used it on my SQ5, and also use it on my venue’s dLive as well.
Works great with decent range/strength.
For a wireless access point (WAP), I would suggest looking at the various “outdoor” WAPs because they generally have a form factor that is tall and thin. They are much easier to clip on to a stand so they can be placed for the best coverage. They are less obtrusive than the “indoor” WAP styles which tend to have a round/wide, but short form factor (for mounting on a ceiling for example). As a bonus, they tend to be a lot more water resistant/waterproof in case your show is outdoors.
Several options like this include the Ubiquity UAP-AC-M or the TP-Link EAP610 Outdoor, etc. If you don’t require the latest and greatest WiFi protocols, you can save a lot of money by getting something a little older (non WiFi6 for example) too.
On a related note, if you are looking for a good router, I would highly suggest the GL-iNet travel routers (like the Opal) because they are so flexible and offer features (like the ability to create a private wifi network while simultaneously also connecting to a local wifi network for internet) that simply aren’t available on most routers.
I agree. I think I have this exact same one. Amazon.com: GL.iNet GL-SFT1200 (Opal) Portable WiFi Travel Router, Mini VPN Wireless Router for Fiber Optic Modem, Mobile Internet WiFi Repeater, Dual Band Openwrt Computer Routers, Home/Business/RV/Cruise : Electronics
Bought it to use as a travel router to connect through a hotel’s wifi anonymously. Also ran a Tapo cam to keep an eye on the room while I was out.
It’s very compact, pretty easy to set up, and should work great for connecting to a CQ12.
