Controlling CQ 18T with Midi CC - Ableton

Hey There!

I recently got a CQ18T to use as my bands live mixer. While I’ve been hitting up against the walls of the limitations (I’d LOVE if i could decide if individual channels send out pre or post fader, this all or nothing approach sucks) all in all it’s been good.

I have one big issue that I’m confused about and the Midi Protocol Document has my head spinning.

The main reason I needed midi implementation was to change scenes, and that is easy in Ableton, just send a program change - but anything smaller than that alludes me!

Right now, I just need to know ONE THING: What CC parameter number adjusts the ip1 Pan?

Truly, I wish there was just a charge that says CC1: ip1 Volume, CC2: ip1 Pan, etc… I would actually pay money for that, if possible.

Small Edit: I thought I was being smart - I set the Mixer up as an input device and recorded movement on the Pan for ip1, and I saw movement on CC 6 as well as extra data on CC97 and CC98, all on Midi Channel 1. Great - I thought. So i just fed that back into the CQ18T, but every channel I sent that message through showed no results on the mixer…

Next, I’m going to ask ChatGPT and update here for anyone else wondering.

Ended up using Ai to figure it out, it was a real weird answer.

For those who find this post in the future, to pan Input 1 via CC in Ableton:

  1. CC99 must be set to 78
  2. CC98 must be set to 0
  3. CC38 (this was the one I never saw) must be set to 0
  4. THEN CC6 acts as your Pan parameter.

I also figured out the CC99 set to 80 is the Input 2, so… Yeah.

Good Luck…

Hey man, leave off AI and dig into the manual, you’ll discover a lot of things…

I did actually read the manual, which is why was so confused. I’ve never had a device manual that explains midi implementation in Hex.

Since there was no explanation about CC envelopes in the midi protocol guide, and I couldn’t make heads or tails of the conversion table, I choose to utilize the tools I had at my disposal and I actually learned a lot about how it works, as well how to read the protocol pdf.

It’s not perfect, but in lieu of other explanations/guides from others, I think I made out alright, and I hope that what I did helps other people trying to learn how to control this system via midi signal originating from Ableton, or possibly other daws that have the same midi implementation.

A lot have been already written on this forum about NRPN midi and I just want to avoid you too much work for stuff that are already very well known and documented here.
I mean, you IP is nothing like a troubleshooting.
I admit that the search function is not very “user friendly”, so feel free to ask specific questions if you have some.
And for your personal search and testing, you can use this free tool (PC) to decode the incoming CQ midi messages:
