I have looked around for an answer but couldn’t find what fuse (5 or 10 or 13amp anyone?) i should use in my PX5 mixer 3-pin IEC connector lead. I’ve simply lost sight of which lead it is within a loom of similar ones and didn’t want to put any old lead back on it! thanks.
Why does your power-lead have a fuse?
IEC cables are interchangeable.
Fused plugs are extremely common in the UK - more or less every 3-pin plug has a fuse.
The PX5 IEC cable would have shipped with a 5A fuse.
Is there a reason for this?
Well, the UK plug design is famously one of the safest in the world (
) - the fuse is there to protect the cable and the equipment if there’s a fault or short circuit. It’s extra protection, rather than leaving it all to the main circuit breaker.
The short answer is extra safety.
all houses in the UK runs on 240, we also have ring mains rather than spurs. A standard two floor house will have separate rings for sockets on each floor, or even kitchen and living rooms etc. The fuse is designed to go before the breaker, meaning that only the item that the fuse protects stops working rather than everything on the ring. which is why in a good sound engineers gig box will be a pack of fuses (they are all the same physical size) a pack costs a total of £2 and will probably last a work life.
