CQ-12T Static Electricity Issue

Hi everybody!

When I touch my CQ-12T I often get “buzzed” by some kind of static electricity. The shock is quite strong, at times. I was wondering if it depends from the a power supply of the CQ, if it could be because of the power strip I connected the mixer to, or something else. I am not looking to target “environmental” issues that cause static electricity, such as moisture in the air, but rather solutions involving just the mixer and its power supply. Any advice to solve this issue?

The first is to bypass the power strip and plug the device into a wall outlet.
I assume that in the US the mixer is also delivered with a power adapter with a 3-pin safety plug (see pic) - correct?
If you actually feel electricity when you touch the device (and nothing else at the same time), you should definitely check your wall outlet or have it checked.

If it’s just a quick zap that most likely is static build up.

If it’s a tingle that does not go away that is a power issue, it could be from
something that is connected to the mixer.

… it could be from something that is connected to the mixer.
I wouldn’t see it that way.
If the mixer is properly grounded to a power outlet using a protective contact, you shouldn’t feel a constant tingling or “buzzing” when you touch the housing - regardless of what is connected to the mixer.

Correct, gave you got anything with a wall wart type power supply connected to it?

Thank you very much for your helpful replies, everyone.

To answer your questions, it is not constant electricity that doesn’t go away, but just a quick zap that happens sometimes (just like static build up).

I am attaching a picture of what I had plugged in the power strip.

  1. a 3-pin plug that came with the CQ, to connect the mixer itself
  2. a 2-pin plug for a desk lamp
  3. a 3-pin plug to convert a European wall wart type power to U.S. plug. This is for a distortion pedal

I will try to gradually remove every unnecessary plug from the power strip, and if the “zap” problem still persists, I will try and plug my mixer directly into the wall.

By the way, I have to revise myself:
My assumption that an external power supply with a power plug with a protective contact grounds the housing of the connected device does not seem to be correct (or at least not always).
It has suggested this safety to me so far, but that does not actually seem to be true.

You seem to know the feeling of static discharge and rule this out in your case.
If that were the case, you should definitely have your set checked by a specialist!
