CQ-20B antenna replacement

Hi everyone! I just got curious since the 20b uses a (what looks like) a standard RP-SMA connector for it’s antenna if anyone has experimented with bigger better antennas or if a replacement has any effect on the wifi performance at all.

I haven’t had any issues with the wifi performance and the stock antenna, but I was thinking if, for example, the mixer would have to be situated in a difficult spot at the back of the stage etc. that maybe I could have a RP-SMA extension cable and an antenna at the end of that that I could bring to the front of the stage in a higher position for better connectivity?

Don’t really know anything about wireless connectivity so I just might be hoping for nothing, but I thought I’d ask.

I’m also curious about this. I have a CQ18T and have read posts somewhere on the internet from people who have replaced the wifi antennas either because they broke or to get a bigger antenna.

What I don’t know is what antenna they used and how do you install it. I’m assuming you just unscrew the old one but where/how is it screwed in, and does it require opening the unit?

Can’t answer for the 18t but on 20b the antenna just unscrews and you can pop in a new antenna no problem. But what I don’t know is if there’s any meaningful difference in performance with different antennas. Bigger is better, right?

Just to chime in with an official statement - for wireless regulatory compliance reasons, you shouldn’t exchange or modify the antenna on your CQ with anything other than the specified part.
If you’ve broken it and need a replacement, you can either order one through our distribution partner in your area using part number AL12258 or you can purchase the OEM part directly from a local third party supplier, using part number ANT-DB1-RAF-RPS.

Thanks!

P.S. If you’re finding that you need more range or that the on-stage antenna isn’t serving you well, I’d always recommend using a small router like the GL.iNet Beryl or similar and a long ethernet cable - it’ll give much you better performance than attempting to extend or relocate the antenna from the mixer itself.

Alright, thanks Mark! Understood and I’ll look for external router if needed. And good to know the part number for original antenna if need be. Cheers!

I have tried other antenna on the CQ20. A 9dBi antenna gave an improvement of about 6dB in signal strength but I have no idea how it performs WRT the relevant standards world wide.
