Hello everyone. I have trouble with Reaper as daw. Specifically with recording and playback. I have my instruments mixed with the mixer and start recording with Reaper. When I hear the recording it’s like I haven’t put anything on FX etc. The same goes when rendering the project. Can anyone please give me any pointers because I’m having trouble figuring out the issue. Is it something on my CQ 12 T that I have to watch out for? Thank you in advance!
According to block diagram, the source for rec.out can be “at maximum” post AMM.
So only FX in insert mode can be record (post insert mode) .
FX in shared mode won’t be heard.
My usage of the CQ12T and Reaper is to record voices.
I generally record “post compressor”, applying and recording with HPF, no gate, no FX insert, no EQ and a bit of comp.
I use reverb in shared mode only to help my monitoring but I apply other FX in REaper.
Thank you very much for taking the time to reply. I’ll definitely check it out. Best wishes!!
I would see it differently.
If you mix your instruments (together with the FX) with the mixer and hear the FX in that mix, e.g. in Main LR, and record that mix, then of course the FX should also be audible in your recorded mix too.
I don’t see the point of using a DAW to record the L/R out of a multi-instrument mix…
I was assuming that all instruments are recorded individually, one instrument, one input in the DAW…
I understand your objection, but from my perspective, he described it exactly that way, and we also don’t know what else he might be planning to do with Reaper.
But even in that case, in my opinion, he would still have the option of not only mixing his shared FX Return(s) into the Main LR (yellow) but also sending it separately to a stereo Out (red), which he could then record in parallel with his input channels.
Or am I wrong?
You’re right if he record the main L/R.
But if he record each channel individually (what is to me the normal use for a DAW), the bloc diagram shows that the rec.out for individual channel is not passing through the FX engine.
Only the Main L/R.
First of all I appreciate you taking time to reply and helping me. Secondly, I use Reaper as a daw so that I can add instruments on my recordings. I don’t know if that makes sense. Another reason is so I can convert the recording to mp3 more conveniently. Of course every instrument is assigned to a different channel. I am quite knew to this that’s why something mind puzzling for me may seem as an easy fix for you. Which makes total sense of course!!
The option SQuser talks about ist to send the FX to an OUT, then physically link this OUT to an INPUT and record the wet signal in you DAW.
Yes, this is possible, juste tried it and it work.
Tks SQuser for pointing out to this.
Yes, but the CQ-12t can record up to 16 (or only 14?) channels.
So, in addition to your 12 input channels, recording at least one stereo Out with FX returns should be possible.
Unfortunately, you’ve omitted the crucial FX path in your diagram - it’s marked in red here:
No, that wasn’t my intention; rather, I wanted to record one or more stereo OUTs directly alongside the inputs - and not send them back to inputs.
This is where I failed, didn’t find a way to direct record OUT 1 to OUT6. in Reaper…
You can definitely record more than 12 tracks in Reaper.
They write on their website:
The number of simultaneous recording inputs is limited only by your hardware.
OK, Go it now.
For the 12T, in the config screen, inside “channel assignment”, set 11/12, 13/14 and/or 15/16 to one of the FX1 and/or FX2.
In your DAW, select 11/12 or 13/14, or 15/16, or any mono channel of these pair as an input.
You make me discover something, tks SQuser.
I prefer to add FX in Reaper but that is good to know.
Therefore, perhaps one more time for you:
Let’s assume you’re only using one reverb effect.
You might be hearing it because you’ve added it to a “rough mix” on Main LR.
If you want to record this FX in Reaper, you’d have to send it separately on the console to a stereo OUT pair, e.g., linked OUT 3 & 4 (in the example labeled as “RevL” & “RevR”), which you would then record in Reaper.
(The yellow channel numbers on the CQ-12t are probably different, and the actual ones for the reverb FX Out 3 & 4 will be “13/14”.)
If you’re using multiple FX, you can either send all the FX Returns together to one OUT pair - but then you’ll have a fixed mix of the FX.
Or you can use up to three OUT pairs to have the option of recording the FX Returns separately in Reaper.
Ok I’ll try it. Thanks again!
