CQ18 & Surround Sound Mixing

Just curious if anyone has tried this with their CQ and daw. i find myself using the CQ18 mixer as my recording interface and its been fantastic. im using logic pro 11.2.2 and it got me thinking… hmmm could be interesting and fun to try. Am I nuts? I know its likely not proper, but… i think i have the goods so interested in experimenting the surround world as winter sneaks in… thxs!

I have worked on many Surround Projects .. i have the CQ18T as well .. this is an interesting idea .. why NOT use the 6 aux outs as L,R,C,LFE,Ls,Rs !! or whatever format works for you !! i think you can tie them together with a DCA for a master volume control lets say .. do you have any sort of outboard hardware as a Master Volume ?? i used to use an SPL surround controller and a friend had/ has a Baldwin Masterpot .. i liked the SPL as it had lots of control .. mutes, 2 Stereo and 2 Surround inputs .. Stereo and 5.1 outs ..

just fired mine up and - Go to the MGrp/DCA Page at the top / Choose DCA 1 / Config / Control & Network / DCAs / Choose a DCA / at the Bottom you can assign any or all of the outputs to a DCA .. and i suppose you can Save output presets and share those across all ..

BUT BUT BUT .. you just will not have full EQ / Dynamics Control and FX in the true sense of Surround !!

my .02 for today !

cheers john

John,

Thanks so much for replying and giving supportive ideas. I just wired my CQ up using the Aux Outs and pulled up the surround demo file that came with logic. I know I don’t have the best representation for pulling it off but I’m curious about the surround world and want to dabble in it. Thank goodness I’m not relying on this for a paycheck! Using the DCAs are a great idea and I’ll play with that. Thank you so much for sending me in the right direction and I’m looking forward to a different level of sonic bliss. I know there are compromises and I’m fine with that. This is just a small home studio using the CQ18 and I love it for my needs. It’s my primary interface for home recording and it does quite well. The surround idea came once I brought in logic and realized I pretty much have basic hardware to try it. So will be fun to play with recording as well and see what happens. Just a winter activity of learning. Thank you for sharing your expertise and advice. I really appreciate it! It’ll be my own little world of immersion so to speak. Much appreciated and your .02 cents is worth waaaayyy more than you think

i have been an audio geek from my Recording Workshop days in 1985 … so much fun !!! a Logic Note: i love the Binaural feature that has been there for a very long time. feels so cool in headphones. things can be over your head like cymbals !! have fun with it !!!
