I was unable to find any topic about this specific problem. After setting up the gain and levels for a Mic and Guitar. I bring up the MAIN LR level and get good sound out of the speakers but the MAINS level meter shows nothing, unless I hit the guitar with a real loud strum, then I see the level pop in at about -60db for a moment. I was unable to find where the discrepancy was. Because of this issue I was unable to record to the USB because levels were undetectable. I reset to factory defaults and still had the same issue. This is new, several weeks ago it was all working fine and I got a great USB recording of a gig. I played it back through the CQ18T and it sounded awesome. I’m not sure what broke, and a bit disappointed because I’ll have to go back and build all my mute groups, custom fader layout, among other things. Appreciate any insight.
Edit: I only get sound out of MAINS when I set the channel input to analog, if I set it to USB, I lose sound out of the MAINS. I did check the USB output and increased the fader but that had no effect.
Thank you for the response. I may not have been very clear in my description. I’m getting plenty of sound out of the speakers, but the level meter on the main fader shows less than -40 dB, while the sound is very loud. It’s not preventing me from getting loud enough music to play a gig, But I cannot record anything in the USB because the level is showing too low. It feels like something is messed up in the software, and the factory reset did not change anything. The other discrepancy is in config mode when I select USB For the channels so I can record, It cuts all sound from the mains. The last time I used it, it recorded perfectly.
What Mike is saying is that it sounds like your gain structure is set up wrong.
It sounds like currently the gain is turned way down in the console and all the “gain” needed to get the volume correct in the room is occurring at the speakers/amps.
Instead you want to get the gain set correctly in the console (ie running inputs close to unity gain) and then turn the speakers/amps down until you get the correct volume in the room.
I appreciate the input, thank you. I should have called out my steps but was trying to be brief.
I used the gain assistant to set up my gain while playing the guitar on channel 1 and then singing for channel 9. The gain was set between 30 to 40 dB on both channels. I then set the faders on those channels to unity. I then brought up the Main LR fader to a good sound level for the room, which was close to unity. However, the Main LR fader level-meter showed nothing, like there was no signal, and clearly I had great output to the mains.
I have played several gigs with the CQ and have never seen this happen. I hope this helps clarify what I’m seeing. I feel confident that I properly gain-staged the inputs. I also did a factory default in case I somehow borked the settings, but that didn’t fix it.
Turn off the gain assistant and double check the gain structure.
To be honest in the few CQ’s I have used / set up I have never used the gain assistant.
