CQ20B pre fader post eg monitor sends

The pre fader sends on fader, are post EQ, which makes enemies of my band members. Every time they get there in-ear monitors as they want them, and I decide to make a drastic EQ change to their instrument for the benefit of the sound in the house, I distract them from their performances. It took a while for me to discover it because I assumed that if it was pre-fader it would be pre-EQ but it took several weeks to discover why the band was always complaining about their earphone mixes mysteriously changing. I’ve been dealing with as I am in constant conflict with the band that I do sound for with the CQ box.

I have been using ALLEN & HEATH for years and they’ve always been very smart about their signal routing. I don’t understand why they’ve designed the CQ 20 B to perform this way. It makes me need to find a different system to work with.

The reason is actually quite obvious: With such simply designed consoles, it’s not uncommon for monitor signals to be sent after the EQ, otherwise you wouldn’t have any channel EQs available in the monitoring system.

The fact that the EQ settings of the monitoring and PA channels differ so drastically is probably not the norm either.
Perhaps we need to know more about the reason for this, since an instrument should ideally sound at least similar - whether to the audience or the musician.
If the sound quality of the PA and monitors differs significantly, it might be more sensible to first establish a similar sound base using the EQs of your Out channels and the Main LR, rather than the channel EQs.
