D Live Cue Mix for IEMS + Tips on Actions

Hey all!

Long time Avid user trying to move over the the D Live world, and would love some help. I would like to create an IEM cue mix that defaults to my personal mix, which would get muted if I PAFL an artist mix. I was trying to accomplish this with an action, but I am having trouble.

So far I have the PAFL as an input into my Matrix Mix, and my personal Auxillary mix also feeding the matrix.

Has anyone here done something similar? How do you accomplish it?

And a couple more bonus questions on actions-

Does an action always need a soft key or midi trigger? Could the simple action of Follow Mix be enough to engage the action?

Has A&H published any common Actions, and how you write them into the console?

As part of the PAFL setup, you can select the “default” audio signal that will be present on the PAFL buss whenever “nothing” is selected for PAFL. In your case, you would want to select your personal aux mix as this default mix. It is called the “Mix to PAFL” setting in the firmware reference guide and I have highlighted it in red in the screenshot below (the screenshot below shows the “Main” as the selected default mix, but you can change it using the “Set Mix” button to select a different mix).

Selecting this will ensure that your personal mix is always being played through the PAFL buss unless something else has specifically been selected for PAFL (like another monitor mix, a specific channel(s), etc). Once that PAFL selection is cleared, it will default back to passing your personal mix through the PAFL channel.

PS - if you are not familiar with the “Ext IP to PAFL Source” setting (show as #3 on this screenshot) and what it does, I would recommend that you read the firmware reference manual regarding that functionality as well. It is a great way to have an audio source (like a coms channel or a matrix of many channels) be live on your PAFL buss at all times regardless of what you are actually PAFLing. Obviously this functionality isn’t needed for a lot of shows/events, but when you do need this functionality it’s super easy to setup.

I suspect one of the reasons you are using a matrix in your current setup is to produce some of this functionality that is already built into the DLive’s PAFL system. With the “Mix to PAFL” and “Ext IP to PAFL” settings, you might be able to set everything up in the PAFL system and not have to use a matrix buss at all for your monitoring/PAFL needs.
