DCA affecting FX

I’m sure this is an easy fix but I can’t find it. I just started using the SQ rack for live shows and all is going well other than one thing. I have stage channels assigned to a DCA so I can bring down the front but still allow the guys to communicate through their iem mixes ( good for when Im playing break music and I need to keep the FOH master up). However, when bring down the level of the DCA group, the guys lose the FX through their iem mixes. The singer brought this to my attention last show. I am stumped because I cannot see why this is happening. It never used to happen with my QU Pac- I could turn the DCA all the way down and it would only affect the input channels assigned to it - never the FX. What am I missing???

Well…. if I select pre fade it works but Im sure I had post fade before and it was fine.

That FX is clearly being affected by the DCA fader. This means that either the FX sends or returns are assigned to the DCA, or the send/return is being routed through a different buss that is part of the DCA group. Using the DCA to change the buss level is also changing the FX level.

You’d think. Ive checked everything I can think of. Nothing other than the instrument inputs I assigned to DCA are shown as assigned. I don’t know where else to look.

A DCA is like a remote control for the channel fader, i.e. the fader that controls the send level to the main LR mix.

This is ‘the’ fader of ‘pre/post fader’ fame.

So if your sends to FX are set to post fade, as they are by default, adjusting the DCA will adjust the channel send level to the main LR, which in turn affects the send level to the FX.

This is the case with all our mixers, so I think you must have had the sends to FX set pre fade on the Qu Pac.

Thanks,
Keith.

Hi Debbie,

As Keith said the DCA affects all the signal that is controlled by the fader.

One possible suggestion is to use a subgroup for vocals (if you have any busses spare). From memory you could assign the subgroup master to the DCA (and remove the individual channels) to continue the current workflow.

Can you post a picture of the DCA assignment page? That will help us determine how the FX might be affected by the DCA.

Thanks Keith. Maybe no-one ever mentioned it to me and because I don’t get to listen to the IEM mixes during the time the DCA for stage is turned down, I wouldn’t have known.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions and comments. I appreciate it!
