“DCA” mute: same as if the DCA fader is pulled down, thus not effecting pre-fade auxes and not muting channel input (and of course respecting the options chosen in direct output settings). Currently DCA Mute behavior mutes the Input Channels which is not desired.
This is very important as most want to use AUX sends for IEMs and keep the channel from being muted.
Keep in mind that there is no DCA audio. It is simply a “remote control” for the sources. Therefore when you “mute” a DCA, you are really just muting the individual sources/members of that DCA.
Furthermore, “muting” a DCA and pulling the DCA fader down is not the same - because muting a source vs pulling down the fader on that source is not the same. They might both attenuate the source on the Main L/R mix, but they can have different effects on the rest of the audio chain too.
If you are looking for a way to sum audio (and therefore have a way to mute to summed audio without muting the individual sources), a group is a more appropriate solution.
EDIT - there are also console settings you can choose to determine how the DCA mute and Mute groups affect other audio routes like direct outs and auxes. I suggest that you download and read the SQ Reference Guide to determine which settings might be appropriate for what you are trying to accomplish. You may find that you can accomplish your goals without using a group to sum audio.
What I am really looking to do which you can’t do in the Block Diagram is ability to Mute the DCA, but keep the Input Channel from being muted on Pre-Fader AUX Mix send so that I can send to IEMs. Current behavior is that if I mute the DCA it mutes all the Input Channels making the Pre-Fade AUX Input Channels muted as well. How is anyone accomplishing this today?
This idea on an old post would provide the capability if implemented:
https://forums.allen-heath.com/t/option-to-not-mute-mix-out-when-dca-is-muted/6873/8?u=victoryofthepeople
- Simplefied option: global Aux setting following LR channel mutes “On” or “Off” (DCA is only affecting LR channel volumes when Aux is set to Pre fader right?). With the option “On” when DCA mutes one or multiple LR channels, Aux output of that channels is also mute. Whith the option “Off” when a DCA mutes one or multiple channels, Aux output of that channels won’t mute.
- Pro option: set this option per Aux. Add an extra option in the Aux Send settings (go to routing, select the Aux, tap the gear icon.). Besides the option to select channel source, assign and pre or post fade, you can add the option to set the behavior of LR channel mutes for that Aux.
“Follow LR Channel Mutes”
“Yes” - “No”
When selecting “No”, if a LR channel is muted (by channel mute or DCA mute), audio is still send to the Aux and to the output of that bus. For IEMS this option seems to suit a lot of people. When using Auxes for different things, like a mix of IEMS and wedges (or name any purpose), you can select the mute behaviour for every Aux.
I agree that this is a limitation of how A&H has decided to set the console up. I do think having an option to set whether a mute affects the aux sends would be a better solution.
That being said, I believe there are really only two workarounds for this current limitation. Either stop using the mute on the DCA and instead lower the DCA fader to infinity, or use groups in lue of DCAs so that you can actually sum that audio together and mute the group audio which would not affect the monitor sends.
EDIT - I also tend to miss what “forum” individual posts are made in because I generally use the “new posts” feature instead of browsing each individual forum. Therefore I likely misread you initial post as a “please explain how to do this” type of post instead of being a “this is a feature request that I am making” type of post. I believe you intended it to be the later, and I answered it as if it was the former. My apologies for doing that.
That being said, I think you will find that this feature request has already been made several times. It is always better to search for existing posts and simply “vote” on them, adding comments as needed. This way A&H has a more accurate “count” of how many people want a particular feature because they may “miss” some duplicated request threads in their “totals”.
For this I set up one extra DCA with evertything assigned to that and just pull its fader down. I would never want a DCA that does not mute channel completely in a fast changeover situation where cables are pulled 10 sec. after the last note of the band.
