So, Dlive as FOH and SQ on monitor duties sharing 2 dante stageboxes. Who controls the Preamps? Can a master be set? What would be best practice: Tie lines or just multicast direct from DT168 to both consoles?
Hi SpaceDuck
Do both consoles have Dante Networking Cards installed?
The preamp is in the stage box. If both consoles can connect and get preamp data, then both consoles will “control” the preamp. I am unaware of a way to lock out one console, but honestly I have never used the DT stage boxes.
Also, there are no “tie lines” coming out of the stagebox. It will be multicast Dante connections. Of course you could always connect the stage box to just one console via Dante and then use tie lines to connect the two consoles together, but that would require a GigaAce card in the Dlive and an available SLink port on the SQ to connect the two consoles together. Using Dante would be much easier IMHO.
You don’t need a GigaAce card for that last option. You can still do that with just plain old Dante.
The GigaAce method I described would ensure that only one console had preamp control. If that is super important to the OP, it is a valid option for the OP to consider that is outside the normal way of using Dante to connect the systems.
Using Dante the exact same way would accomplish the exact same thing. Just slow down and think about for one second. Tie lines out can be GigaAce or Dante. There is no preamp control unless you patch the DT box directly to both consoles.
Yes, both use dante.
I’m trying to figure out what would be the most “elastic” configuration considering I need to split about 40 channels 3 to 4 ways. FOH/Mon/Virtual Soundcheck/External plugins. So a lot of dante patching. So the question is what is less taxing resource wise. Simple multicast from the stageboxes, or all boxes to dlive and then tie lines to monitor desk via dante again (this would remove preamp control for monitoring i suppose, but add extra steps and maybe latency). Then there are the extra virtual soundececk (LiveTrax2 via Dante Virtual Souncard) and plugin sends/returns (RME Digiface Dante) who add to the complexity.
