Do I have a hardware issue with my SD Card slot?

Hi,

When inserting an SD card, you push it in until it clicks. I assumed that the click would lock the card in place to prevent it from coming out.

On my CQ-20, I can easily pull the SD card out even after the click, without having to push it again to release it. Is this normal?

It’s the same with mine, for what that’s worth. I’m not familiar enough with the SD Card standard to know if a restraining mechanism is common. Most of the examples I can think of intended to secure the card in place involve a cover of some kind that closes over the card slot.

So it should be normal, thank you Kate

Just FYI, that insertion mechanism doesn’t always have a capitvation component that will keep the card in place. However, if you pull the card out after it has clicked in, when you insert the next card, it may not properly engage. You really should be releasing the spring-loaded mechanism each time. I’ve seen similar issues with digital cameras that take SD cards - Some of them don’t put a captive lock on the card - and strange things can happen if you override the spring mechanism. You can also wear down the metal contacts faster because they aren’t “spreading” to remove the card.

This may be a moot point if you’re already using the card successfully, but I’ve noticed that it’s really easy to insert the SD card backwards. When you do that, the spring mechanism doesn’t engage. When inserting the card correctly, the label should face the center of the unit. On my unit, the press-to-insert and press-again-to-eject mechanism is working as expected, but I don’t hear any clicks.
