i’m looking to setup a very quiet setup with an SQ-6 and some I/O-extension.
Does the DX-164-W has fans. Its hard to figure out.
The A&H documentation is silent on the matter (no pun intended).
The dreaded AI states it does not have a fan, but doesn’t quote it’s source, so I wouldn’t believe it.
Perhaps a question for A&H directly (or for your local A&H distributor)?
Don’t forget to report the answer back here for the rest of the community’s benefit (as I may be interested in the outcome also).
There are some vents on the front panel, but they may be for natural (or forced) air circulation.

i will check with them.. but i just had a thought: i read the Sq Rack is pretty silent (as the Sq6 is)
Can i use the Sq-Rack as an IO extension?
Let’s pretend my main mixing-station is the SQ6… can i remote control the IO from there. For example … to send my Drummachine from the Input on the Sq6 to a Reverb connected to the SQ-Rack?
I am sort of guessing here, but based upon what I understand and have read…
You should be able to tie the SQ and SQ-Rack together and send signals between them.
What you will not be able to do is to use the SQ to remotely control the SQ-Rack. You will have to use a separate tablet using mixpad (or similar).
Dave
Yes, you can use an SQ-Rack as remote I/O. I’m doing that with my SQ 6. As mentioned, you’ll need an IPad or pc running SQ MixPad to set things up and control the preamps.
It is anything but silent, however… I can hear mine from 15 feet away. I’m pretty sure most of the noise is coming from the Dante card’s fan, so you might be ok if you’re just using s- link. I keep meaning to temporarily remove the Dante card to be sure it’s the culprit, but keep forgetting. It (the most recent revision of the 32x32 card)is way louder than the older 64x64 Dante card in my SQ6 (which is itself already borderline, noise-wise)
In my case, when back in the studio the sq rack is sitting in my amp room and the noise doesn’t matter, but if it was in the main or control room, it would be totally unacceptable.
The DX164-W does have a fan.
The DX168 is fanless.
Good job we don’t believe the AI then!
Dave
funny enough that the AI Summarize does a pretty decent job about this thread ![]()
that the dx 168 has no fans (or very quite ones) is great news. I don’t know where i read about loud fans in the DX168 (maybe in the DT168 Dante version)
i found out.. it was on some other forum. A user ment the Ar2412 (wich has a noisy fan) .. i THOUGHT he ment the DX168
No it doesn’t have fans.
wich device you mean exactly?
Just ask A&H directly to get a definitive answer. In the long run it saves time and effort.
Dave
But A&H has already given a definitive answer here:
I didn’t see the red ‘&’. I was viewing my phone messages after ‘sleep mode’ had kicked in and the screen had turned to monochrome mode!
You are 100% correct - that is the definitive statement from A&H on the matter.
It is also good to know about the DX168…
