EVERYTHING IO BETWEEN A GX4816 AND A AR2412

Hi all

trying to save some costs and wondered if i bought a GX4816 for my main IO. Could i use one of the dx ports then connect an AR2412 to use this as expansion RACK ?

Would i need to covet desk to 48k too?

No. The AR2412 doesn’t use the DX protocol, but rather dSnake.
You should be able to connect it to the SLink port on your Avantis, as this supports the dSnake protocol, among others.
If you also want to connect a GX4816, you would need to install a gigaACE card.

I don’t understand the question.

As noted, the DX boxes and AR/AB boxes don’t use the same protocol language. This means you can only use the DX ports on the GX4816 to connect DX boxes. (Not counting the fact that you can connect the ME personal monitor system to one of the two DX ports).

The SLink port is actually a multi-protocol port that automatically switches to use the needed protocol based on what you plug into it. If you plug the GX4816 into the Slink port, it uses the GigaAce protocol. If you plug a DX box into the SLink port, it uses the DX protocol. If you plug an AB/AR box into the SLink port, it will use the DSnake protocol, etc, etc, etc.

The console will always run at 96k. If you plug something into the desk that runs at 48k (Dsnake device, 48k Dante device, etc) the system will convert the two clock speeds so that communication can occur, but the two different devices will still running at their default clock speeds (96k for the console, and 48k for whatever device you plugged in). This happens automatically so there aren’t any “settings” that you need to change to make this work.

The desk runs on 96kHz, always!

is there a slink port io card for the avantis so i can run a gx4816 using the built in s link port then a secondary to run a ar84 from foh?

No.
DX168 would be the way to go. Or DX88-P.

Yes. Adding the SLink card would allow you to connect two stage boxes of any supported variety, including a GX4816 plugged into one SLink port and an AR/AB stage box plugged into the other.

I think what Steffen is alluding to is the fact that when you add the cost of the SLink card to the equation, a DX box is about the same total cost. However the real advantage to using a DX box with the GX4816 is the fact that you can connect the DX box directly to the GX4816. This would allow you to use the expansion card slot from something else (like a Dante or Waves card).

I had previously assumed that there was no SLink card available for Avantis.
That’s why I initially recommended a gigaACE card to the OP so they could connect a GX4816 while an AR2412 is connected to the SLink port, which was simply ignored.

if i got the gigace card for the avantis can you run the 4816 reliably off one cat 5 instead of a pair?

To my knowledge, there is no way to connect the GX4816 in a redundancy mode with 2 cat cables.

There is no S-Link card for Avantis (or dLive, since both use the same slot size).

The second port on a GigaAce card/connection is only able to create a redundant connection and it’s use is completely optional. If the device you are trying to connect doesn’t have a redundant connection itself, then you can’t use second/redundant port even if you wanted to. The GX4816 is one such device. It only has one GigaAce port on it, so you can’t run it with redundancy anyway. Simply connect the GX4816 to the first GigaAce port and everything will work fine.

Hello,

I AM using gigaACE on Slot 1 and Dante 64 x 64 on Slot2.

All wireless connections come in via Dante (switched, not dual redundant, as my older wireless receivers are not capable of this). The GX4816 is connected to the gigaACE card in slot 1, and if I need even more connectivity (e.g., at the FoH position), I can use the built-in SLink Ethercon connection for my old AR2412 or AB168.

It all works out-of-the-box, but whether the cost of a gigaACE card is worth it in relation to the cost of the DX stage boxes is something I’ll leave to you to decide.

Best regards,

HP
