Is there anybody that have an experiece of connection for a 19" external monitor with usb touch screen? How did you do about linux driver? Do you have any suggestion?

We already have integrated drivers for external touch screens for a series of displays built by a company called GVision.

We’ve tested with the 15" P15BX-AB-***, I believe our US distribution have also tried this with the 17" model, which worked, although it requires calibration.
When you plug the External GVision USB Monitor in, you should find a secondary calibration tool under Utility, to configure the touch.
Other makes / models will probably require manual calibration and may require manual installation which we do not directly support.

Question about this, does this add a “second screen” to the iLive, or does it simply mirror the internal screen giving you a larger surface?
What about the concept of adding support for something like this:
These have immense potential for adding a second screen that is not limited to be just a mirror.
Any thoughts?

Hi Stephen,
At present the external GVision screen will mirror the integrated screen and allows the user a larger view, with the same content.
The problem with the mimomonitors link provided is the lack of firmware support for Linux, which is necessary if this were to work with iLive.
You can always run an Editor session on a laptop / touch tablet pc and get access to more than one feature at a time.
In case we ever did provide split content on the GVision screen, were there any particular screens you would want access to simultaneously ?

An update for anyone considering purchasing the GVision external touch screen.
GVision have changed the hardware in newer models of the P15BX-AB, but not up issued the model number.
The newer units will not work with the existing linux drivers for the Touch Screen at present.
The way to differentiate between models which will and will not work correctly is the “configuration” of the unit - which is located on the rear of the GVision screen.
Configuration 23C2-AU43N-GU04-A(G2) works correctly.
Configuration 2CH2-AU47B-GU04-A(G2) does NOT work correctly.
The latter is the newer model.
GVision indicate it may be possible to order the older configuration directly from them until a solution can be found.

Well im gonna start into this, the Gvision series is way over priced for what your getting. the cheapest gvision i cant get in canada is for $350 for a 15" basic square…where as i can go with an acer 23" widescreen high res for the same price if not a bit cheaper. the Dev’s should start to incorporate drivers for more touch screen models. Acer being the one i would prefer. the comparison between the two are too much to explain…even for a gvision 19" its $800, why pay that amount for a 19" square when there are 23" out there for the cost of their 15" with better res, contrast ratio and aspect which i know doesnt really matter.
With all the latest patches fixing the small probs and improving such a great console. maybe its time to focus on the external monitor and giving it more attention then just basic info. maybe the ability to have it display what ever info your looking for.
It would be nice to have support for a couple of mainstream touch screen monitors. I searched around and couldn’t find the GVision ones.

I think this information needs to be distrubited to your sales representatives in the United States. This would of saved us not only hours, but days of trying to figure out why the 22" inch monitor that we were INSTRUCTED TO PURCHASE with the board would not work, as well as now a new 17" monitor. Two Touchscreens down… both will NOT work with the iLive Surface 176.
I was told if you had a particular brand or model that connected in the same way that happened to have linx drivers you could submit it to tech support and they would see about including it in future versions of the firmware.

It depends…
Two or three different driver scenarios are possible.
kernel-modules: works from the scratch if you have a binary, otherwise you have to build a own kernel with the module support
build-in-driver: you have to build your own kernel anyway
Building your own kernel isn’t that difficult. Youn only need some time.

It would be good if someone from A & H could chime in and advise what has happened since 2009 and if they now have included drivers for any additional external touchscreens or at least the current GVison ones.

In terms of an update on external touch support, we haven’t progressed the newer GVision drivers. Lots of customers were complaining about the cost of the GVision screens compared to competitors.
The problem with new screens / drivers, is there are multiple Linux distributions in use in different series of iLive and iLive-T/R, which makes getting a specific 3rd party external touch screen to work on all models very difficult. Especially when the distro’s are from different vendors and span 5 years in time!
We’re using custom rolled kernels in most models, so the stock drivers you will get from most external touch manufacturers will not work, and need to be compiled from source against our kernel version.
This is probably beyond the scope of most users, and runs the risk of bricking the touchscreen if you get something wrong, so we would probably not encourage this.
I guess with the arrival of Editor, and then Mixpad most customers need for this feature declined - we don’t seem to get that many requests any more.
There are also some advantages to using a laptop running editor, with a large touch screen attached to the laptop, because you get a second way of controlling the desk.

how about A&H just support an far more widely used product like ELO touch monitors…they use linux. MA lighting use these as well and so do plenty of other AV OEMs.

Editor is useful more useful in fact and by far and away the best software of any manufacturer and I love it, we use to pre write shows for customers and use it to run our own gigs or do monitors but it is slightly less intuative than the touchscreen and not something I want to leave with an inexperienced operator
The reason we want to be able to supply an external screen is that our most common modus operandi is we set the set gig up ensure everthing is running through sound check and then leave and return later putting my laptop under my arm as I go leaving the operator to run the system from the touchscreen.
The touchscreen is marginally small and particularly hard to read in sunlight (and no angle adjustment on T series) and we would love to be able to leave a 17" or similar touchscreen that mimics the screen on the surface allowing easier reading and operation.
Whilst its completey understandable that A & H can not support and write specific drivers for every single touchscreen on the market I would hope that working with only one or two manufacturers they could offer a pathway to having this available.
As to the cost I dont know what the price of the GVision were but given this would be specialist request I would suggest the price is the price and you either pay it or you don’t but it appears currently that there are no options at any price as the there are no drivers for the current models.

Teknik, yes I completely understand what your saying.
Jeremy, absolutely, either 3M or Elo have very good support these days, and would make a better choice.
What I would suggest is you either contact tech support through official channels and log your request, or make some noise to your distributor.
This will have the effect of getting external support pushed up the priority list.
