hi, i am to receive a cq20b next week. my project is to use it for sending all my synth to multi-effects effects devices, ordered also materials to remote it with nrpn midi controls etc… and i have to order some other materials for this configuration… it is a lot of stuff and money but suddenly I am very worried: i just seen that the cq20b has a fan on his side and by google research i have seen a picture from somebody which replaced this fan with a more silent one… . I am in a very quiet music room, is the fan of the cq20b really audible?
One is very quiet but of course fans vary. I will tutn mine on later and check again.
It could be problematic to rely on statements made here.
For example, I am lucky that the fans in my SQ are inaudible in practical use, while I have also experienced SQs where they were really annoyingly loud - unsuitable for a studio environment.
But of course, it should always be possible to replace a loud fan afterwards.
thank for your answers.
i was wandering if i would do better return it without unpack and cancel all other orders but it seems the better thing to do is unpack it and try…

But what would be your alternative then?
other mix, ui24r for example or any rack synth mixer. I choosed CQ principally for midi control and ordered a ‘elecra one’ console for just having the send controls for all synths in one screen/physical knob, that would be ideal but if the noise is problematic i will find other solutions.
In what condition a fan noise would be an issue when playing with synth ?
Are you recording synth with mic ?
Or recording voice when playing ?
The very few case of noisy fan reported I could read where not mentioning a turbine like sound.
the problem is of course when i don’t play… i play alone, i like the silence of the room, i can concentrate before playing, i can appreciate when i listen carefully music the silence before and after etc… i didn’t want to make personnal bad feelings with your commununity, i wanted opinion and advices, i will see (and listen) myself.
No problem, my question was just to understand better the context.
Tks to your reply it more clear.
I don’t own a 20B, I can only tell that my 12T is dead silent.
I will let the 20B owners reply but I would be surprised if its fan would be so much disturbing.
cq20b received today. I powered it, connected to ethernet, and in this rest situation, the fan is inaudible… very good. The cqmix on pc is well made and clear. I go to connect synths and multi effects, and wait for the electra one console (and program it) to be fully operational and autonomus…
A bit late to reply but my fan is also inaudible.
Also, for anyone thinking about the Ui24R, it does not have a fan but there are reports that it gets very hot. It was my choice for a new mixer (I had the Ui16 before) until the CQ20 came out.
I’ve got the CQ20.
I guess you could hear the fan… especially if the unit is getting warm. But I think you can take care of it. Just position it well.
When mine is running cool / idle… You don’t hear it… I can’t actually measure it. Background noise in office right now is ±30dB(A). With unit powered on, measured at 20cm (!) from fan ±31dB(A) and that is within measurement tolerance/change background noise. Same with dB(C) no noticeable increase.
Changing to Ui24… you can make up your mind for yourself. But to my opinion the CQ is far superior in sound quality. I wouldn’t change it back.
