I am thinking of getting an SQ Rack for our band gigs. As I run sound from on stage mostly, I need to automate effects parameters using MIDi from Ableton. Is it possible to adjust some basic effect parameters using MIDI (or any other way), such as delay time, reverb mix etc?
There is a document on the A&H website describing the MIDI mappings - so covers what you can and can’t do.
I am not able to point you at it just at this moment, as I am on a business trip and only have access to my phone and not my laptop…

The MIDI protocol for SQ can be found here: https://www.allen-heath.com/content/uploads/2023/11/SQ-MIDI-Protocol-Issue5.pdf
There’s no commands that can directly control FX parameters, however you can trigger scenes that are filtered to do just that. It is filtered to just FX parameters though - it would change all of them at once (if you save changes)
Thank yo for the help.
One of the basic requirements I would like to achieve is the setting of the ‘Tempo’ so that delay effects are correct. As virtually every song is different, that would mean using scenes would require a different scene for every song (or every tempo) which is real inconvenient. It would be so much easier if the tempo could be set via MIDI. We previously used a Behringer X32 and set the tempo using OSC which worked perfectly. Maybe the SQ isn’t for me, which is a shame as it is an awesome bit of kit for the most part.
But thanks again for the help.
How about using the foot switch to set tap-tempo?
Thanks, yes that might work for us. I like to automate stuff as much as possible. We don’t always have a sound guy helping with setup etc so everything we can save in cabling, setup etc is a bonus. I guess one more cable to setup won’t be a big issue ![]()
You can assign tap tempo to a softkey and trigger that softkey with MIDI - that gives you external control of the tempo, at least?
Hmmm yes that would definitely work. Maybe the SQ will work after all
Thank you
Presumably the MIDI would be a series of repeated Note msgs sent ‘in time’ from the DAW?
Yes, exactly that. Tap the beat programmatically, from the DAW
Not sure if I misunderstand the question. But can’t you just use the mixing station app (on your tablet or phone) to achive this?
Yea it would need an extra device, but then you are FREE ![]()
I control all of the SQ Rack via midi with mixing station.
