We use a matrix mix for our livestream. It is pre-fader so that we can have separate volume control for FOH and Livestream. I want to add Reverb FX and Delay FX to our instruments but only for the matrix mix.
I want to be able to select the LR mix, adjust instrument volumes, and not have the livestream reverb FX change. I want to be able to select the matrix mix, adjust instrument volumes, and have the reverb FX automatically change.
I can create an aux bus for any instruments that I want to add FX to and add an FX to it as an insert. I can select the aux bus to adjust instrument volumes and the reverb FX will always be correct. However, I can only have 1 insert on the bus, so this won’t work.
I can send the instruments to one of the built-in FX buses and set the send to pre-fader and send the return to the matrix mix. However, the Reverb doesn’t change when I change instrument volumes in the matrix mix. If I lower the guitar volume, the reverb will be too much. If I increase the guitar volume, the reverb will not be enough. If I set the send to post-fader, then it works great, except for the fact that if I select the LR mix and change instrument volumes, it will change the FX on the livestream.
If I create a couple of aux busses (one for reverb FX and one for Delay FX) to use as dedicated FX sends, then I still run into the same issue. If it’s set to pre-fader, there’s not automation for FX levels. If it’s set to post-fader, then FX is affected by volume changes in the LR mix.
Is there a way to accomplish what I’m wanting? Thank you in advance
Edit: We are using the Avantis mixer
You didn’t mention the mixer type you are using.
This information is mandatory.
Thank you, I’ve edited my post accordingly
If you set up different FX for stream and FoH it should be possible. Make sure that the FX for the stream are not routed to the Main mix.
They should now behave like the FX for FoH without affecting FoH but affecting the matrix only.
Thank you for the reply! The FX for the stream is indeed only routed to the stream.
If I set the FX send to Pre-Fader in the stream mix, then volume changes in FoH mix do not effect the FX which is great, but then neither do volume changes in the stream mix. I’d have to select the FX send and manually adjust the Reverb for each instrument which would not be great.
If I set the FX send to post-fader, then it works exactly the way I need in the stream mix. If I select the stream mix and adjust instrument volumes, the FX is always the right amount. However, even though the FX return is ‘off’ for the FoH mix, volume changes in the FoH mix also change the FX levels in the stream mix, even though the stream mix is set to pre-fader and the FX return in the stream mix is also set to pre-fader.
It needs to be post fader. Otherwise it doesn’t reflect the fader level from the return channel and it is always the same level (the pre level).
Agreed
You are correct. The problem though is when it is set to post-fader, the FX is affected by the FoH mix. I need the FX to be post-fader and not be affected by the FoH mix. I can’t find a way to accomplish this.
Would I be correct to assume that it’s not possible to have FX on my livestream behave like a post-fader FX and not be affected by the FoH mix?
But it isn’t routed to the FoH!
Correct, it is not routed to the FoH. When I select FoH mix, the FX channel strip displays show it’s not connected. If I select the FX channel and go to routing, it shows that it is not connected to FoH.
Edit: If I change instrument volumes in the FoH mix, I can hear the FX get stronger or weaker in the livestream mix.
The fact that you spent time trying to help me out was tremendously appreciated…hats off to you.
We had the same issue on our GLD-112. However, since we have Dante and a dedicated person to mix our livestream, we may switch to using a DAW. That would give us the control we want.
Thanks again @steffenromeiss! Keep being awesome!
If you still have the GLD you could use that for the livestream.
Another common way to do such things is to double patch inputs. But the channel count could be an issue in this case.
On the dLive you can dedicate a second surface to the stream mix, for example.

FINAL CONCLUSION: I’ve really dug into the Avantis manual and I’m pretty confident that the FX sends on each channel are tied to the channel’s fader setting. So, you can only chose pre-fader or post-fader at the channel level.
Currently, it does not appear that we can redefine an FX send’s source independently from the channel’s own send configuration.
In other words, without using external FX or inserts, I believe you cannot have a post-fader FX on a pre-fader mix without the FX being affected by the FOH mix.
As already stated, if the FX isn’t routed to the main mix, you can use it independent of the main mix. It doesn’t contribute to the main mix in this case.
But it is still dependant from the channel fader if it is set to post fader.
Doing a mix independent of the main mix requires the send to be pre fader.
TBH, this is the case with all available mixers on the market. That’s how they work.
Auxiliaries are called that way for a reason.
