Hi there
I really love having the flexibility to record multi-track to the SQDrive USB Stick on the desk, however, as I work with numerous clients I’m finding I’m losing track of who recorded what pretty quickly, because this is what I’m seeing:
I must admit I haven’t tried to take the USB OUT of the SQ6 and move it to a PC to see if I can rename files there instead (as that feels like quite the faff in itself) but if there is a slick way to rename within the SQ6 I would love to hear about it.
Many thanks in advance
Unfortunately, I’m also not familiar with any such luxury features.
The capabilities of USB-A (especially SQ Drive) on the SQ were and are only rudimentary and actually no longer up-to-date (see, for example, the desire for simple MP3 playback).
You can label your sticks like you used to label tape boxes or cassette sleeves, but you still have to keep a careful record of their contents, just like in the good old days of recording.
But let’s be happy about the major step that the individual recorded tracks are now labeled!

Fair enough!
Hopefully it might appear on a fimrware update down the road!?
Funny, I was laughing with a friend a few weeks back that when I record on my SQ,
I need to label the SSDs like I used to label boxes of 1/4" recording tape.
Back to the future baby!

I am running FW 1.6 on my Sq5 and recently recorded our bands sound rehearsal session on a USB stick. I am able to move the stick to my Windows 10 based computer. The file structure on the stick is fully visible in file explorer and I am able to Rename each folder with a name I choose.
From there I have been able to import the separate multi-track files from that folder into Audacity for creating a multi-track to stereo mix FLAC/WAV or any file type supported by the Audacity.
I was surprised at how simple it all was to accomplish a rough mix in very little time.
So each folder containing your tracks can be renamed in file explorer to indicate which session you have created is inside. Hope that helps,
Here is the modified structure after copying and editing the Sq files after being transfered to the local disk
Cheers..
Sure, I can rename the files on my Mac and even the tracks in Reaper. I could rename 1/4" tape boxes too with a sharpie and some white tape.
But here’s where I don’t need to be renaming files; a long job with many SSD drives over the course of several days. Be nice if I opened those drives and at least saw a date. That would help.

BTW, Reaper does an excellent job with both those tasks and I have promoted Reaper to primary recording and the SQ to backup. Having once said I would “NEVER” use a computer as a recorder after being burned badly by Pro Tools TWICE! First time, shame on Pro Tools. Second time, shame on me. Wouldn’t touch Pro Tools as a live recorder ever.
Well, something changed here:
Firmware 1.6 now allows a time/date-stamp for recordings to USB drives if a MixPad is connected at the time.
And when recording channels, the individual tracks are also given the appropriate names.

This is one of several reasons that I record USB to a DAW instead of using SQ Drive. Also saves me having to transfer files later, and is more reliable.
