I had an following issue: I had input channels 3 & 4 previously assigned for certain instruments with specific gain setups and I happened to choose to reuse these channels 3 and 4 as linked stereo pair. I hadn’t done anything else but set gains to those channels, so I simply remapped these mono channels as stereo to be used as laptop source. After throwing some audio signal from laptop I noticed that L/R levels didn’t match. Initially I was suspecting something from audio source being mismatched (maybe pad pushed in for one channel in DI or audio being pre-panned within laptop). It took me a while to recognize that this was due to linked stereo channels having different gain-levels. I think (but not 100% sure) that I tried changing the gain-level of linked stereo channel, and if I did then must say that the gain levels didn’t rematch to unison.
This behaviour may be a feature, but it doesn’t feel natural to my instinct, as there apparently is no way (?) to either see or configure the level of linked stereo L/R channels when you are processing stereo channel. I had to switch channels back to mono in order to see the problem and match the gains again.
Does this pattern exist on purpose, or is it a bug? If it’s a feature then which channel specific settings are following the original mono settings? EQ? Compressor? Something else / everything?
I know on other A&H consoles you can click on the input number on the routing page and it will pull up the preamp information (including the gain setting) and allow you to change it. This will give you access to the “raw” preamp gain settings which you can adjust individually for each preamp/input (even if the channel has been assigned as a stereo channel).
I honestly have not used the QU system myself to know if this technique works or not on these models.
I’m not sure on which desk you are. I’m on a Qu-SB and in the popup screen after hitting the link button (on the iPad obviously) you can choose which parameters you want to link. NOT linking the gains results in what the OP describes.
This sounds way more intuitive, but I didn’t notice this kind of linking selection for different parameters. Need to take another look on case this exists in some subsection. Personally I would find stereo gain following L channels settings more natural than having 'em unpaired. At least it should be shortcut setting for the channel. Going to run the desk next saturday again and maybe I’ll have time to investigate this a bit more.
Btw, parallel question: I ran into an issue with stereo mix channels not picking up the signal of the faders. Basically not showing any leds in mix master fader, while I was trying change the faders for the mix. I noticed that mix channels had purple led color, while mono channels were green (if I remember correctly). Tried to check that all the output channels were linked to AR2412. Any guess on what could cause the channel faders to not send to mix fader? Had to rely to 1-6 mono channels, which were fortunately enough.
Edit: I didn’t make it apparent which desk I was running, even though it shows as tag: It’s QU-5D.
I imagine I didn’t make any changes to mix channels, as it’s brand new desk with only few gigs behind, so I would assume they would be pre-fader by default. Additionally I didn’t do anything different than what I do for Mix channels 1-6. Just selecting the mix-channel and trying to send something to it. I’d suspect that routing might be off to AR2412, but even if it was I would expect to see channel faders be sending to mix-fader (the one on the far right). At the time I was getting nothing, which was baffling as mono channels were picking up channel sends with no issues.
Still, even with this minor issues I have to say that I 100% love the desk. Few parameters and configurations are bit far away under multiple UI tabs, but it certainly has that QU specific “hands on” -vibe for everything you use regularly. As of yet I haven’t tried any channel grouping, so that’s something I need to still check. Also love the way the sidechain compression has been applied to channels. Really easy to set up.
Purple would be Post-fader, and green would be Pre-fader.
So, if your stereo inputs to these stereo mix channels are post-fader, you also need to open the corresponding faders in your Main LR mix.
Furthermore, as previously indicated, it is possible that these input channels are not assigned to the relevant mixing channels.
