LiveTrax Output Level is loud

I just started using LiveTrax, and I noticed that when I playback the recording, it is louder, and I have to turn down the mix to get the correct levels.

Is there a way to adjust this in LiveTrax? I can not seem to find the spot.

I used the Direct Outs set to Post preamp, should I switch to TieLines?

Tie lines would basically offer the same pick point - post preamp - so I doubt you would see a difference there.

That being said, I think tie lines are a more appropriate way to set it up given the fact that most people want to recording directly from the source without processing, etc. Setting it up this way also has the advantage of leaving the direct outs available for another use where you might want a different “pick point” that allows for some channel processing to be passed along.

Maybe your Direct Out level trimmers are just set to more than 0 dB?

I, on the other hand, prefer to use the Direct Outs because the channel names give me a better overview of all recording’s level and allow me to deliberately increase levels if necessary.
But the tie lines are also possible, of course.

You’re right that with LiveTrax (which this thread specifically mentioned), direct outs would be better if that is how console integrates with LiveTrax (ie how/where LiveTrax pulls it’s channel names from). I don’t use LiveTrax and honestly I wasn’t thinking about that functionality when I made my comment. My apologies.

There’s no reason to apologize, because everyone has their own preferred practices.
But also new in 1.6 is that the individual multi tracks also in SQ Drive are get the names of their channels.

All my Direct Outs are set to 0db, I sent a support ticket to Harrison and they did ask me what my USB return volume set at, I don’t remember ever seeing that setting. As soon as I hear more from them I will post the solution.

Thanks everyone

They’re probably referring to the fact that no one knows how you send the signals back to the computer via USB.
Do you want a kind of virtual soundcheck, sending the USB channels back to the exact same channels from which they were recorded - and have actually only changed their patch?
Or do you want to add the recorded tracks to a mix, thus using completely different “USB returns”?

Not sure. I am sending back 1 to 1 back to the mixer. When I play it back I have to turn the mixer down as it is much louder than what it should be. I had read someone else was having this issue (not with livetrax) and they had to compensate in the DAW. I just can not figure out where to do this at.

But sending it back doesn’t automatically switch the mixer to suddenly use USB instead of the inputs used for recording.
So what do you do to switch to USB?

I change the Input patchng from the SLink to USB, I am getting the correct USB channels to the correct Inputs

Unless you’re using any scenes that might change anything other than the patch, I would also expect your levels to stay the same.

I am going to try another DAW on Sunday and see if I get the same issue.

any movement on this? I’m seeing the same issue on my side but I’m using the direct out from soundgrid not USB and noticed that channels were clipping. The other issues I noticed is that livetrax is also hitting the CPU pretty hard compared to reaper. I was recording all 64 tracks on reaper and had no problem at all in playback but with 48 on livetrax the CPU hits 100%

I have not gotten anywhere on this, maybe I will try Reeper. I can not find any gain control on the USB Bus anywhere on the board.

Hey guys I think I got it figured out, and it was right in front of me the whole time. The USB bus has it’s own gains. So when you patch the inputs to the USB bus it does not use the gain structure you already have in place. And by default all the the gains are at 0.

But that’s the right thing to do, because you don’t want to increase the already heavily pre-amplified recorded level of a dynamic microphone a second time; you want to maintain it.
So you’re essentially sending the signal to USB at the correct level and want to receive the same level again, i.e., with 0 dB gain/attenuation.

Please test whether you have the same problem if you use SQ-Drive instead of LiveTrax.
