Loud noise when tracking over USB

When tracking using the USB-B interface, running Reaper on Windows (10/11), the USB interface will stop responding suddenly, whether recording or on standby. When it stops responding it also plays a horrifically loud sound. It’s not the sound of a ground hum or interference of any kind. If anyone has any leads or experience with this issue, I’d love to hear what the issue could be related to so I know what to avoid in a given recording session.

This issue occurs even when starting a new project, so I doubt it’s a buffering issue. The loud sound is, as far as I’m aware, only audible through the USB aux return on the CQ interface, but is directly related to whatever is going on on my computer. If I open the System Preferences in Reaper, the sound will most of the time go away. I think opening that window resets the clock on the interface, maybe? Any leads would be helpful. Thank you.

Consider recording to the sd card, then if the event is recorded there the problem is likely internal to the cq and not found in the usbb connection through/to the computer/reaper. With that information you may be able to solve/fix the issue…Cheers!…./s~

Excellent idea. Recording through SD has never been an issue, but I’ve never considered recording in parallel to find the issue. I’ll give this a shot. Thanks for the idea

You can’t record in parallel (as useful as that would be). However, testing with the above method would still isolate the issue to the cq port, the cable and then onto the computer and its signal chain. List the actual item in use…Cheers!…/s~
