A sound tech at my church reported not being able to hear anything on the right side of the headphones when enabling PAFL for any channel. This started a few weeks ago with no explanation.
Our first suspicion was that the headphones were bad, but while working on a mix using Virtual Soundcheck I noticed if I pan anything to the right I cannot hear the channel in house either. All channels including the Main LR channel are set to center i.e. no panning.
Most sound techs do not have access to low level audio config on the board nor can they save any scene changes. Those of us who do have admin access do not know what caused this.
I am wondering if anyone might have any thoughts as to any board configuration that could be causing this? I have not found anything in the firmware docs.
I would first check the PAFL setup in the Avantis. You can independently control both the right and left console audio and the left and right headphone output. Itâs likely that the audio settings for either the right side of the console or the right headphone output have been lowered/removed.
The image below is how you would typically want the âMains to PAFLâ section look with the PAFL L set at 0 db left audio and -inf right audio, and the PAFL R set at -inf left audio and 0 db right audio.
Thank you so much for your reply. These are how the settings are setup in our PAFL settings. When I tried to mirror the settings you provided, the issue of no audio on the right side still persists. So still a bit puzzled by it.
I donât know how you are getting ANY PAFL audio since all sources are turned to â-inf dBâ for both the left and right PAFL buss.
Although there is nothing assigned to the âExt IP to PAFL Sourcesâ I think I would recommend that you turn that option off to help prevent any unexpected issues in the future.
PS - the screen shot I used came straight out of the firmware reference guide and I used it because it was easy to find and insert into my post. However it isnât my âsuggested settingsâ or anything like that.
PSS - donât assume that your headphones are fine based on the fact that you canât hear audio panned to the right in the house PA. That could easily be caused by a separate routing/patching issue where the Main Right channel isnât patched to the correct physical output. I would test the headphones using an external source (like a phone, etc) where you know the outputs are working correctly.
⌠you write that you only have a âsimilarâ issue.
So whatâs different about yours than the OP?
There at first, the PAFL was suspected, but then it turned out that the right channel was also missing from the mix.
If the latter isnât the case for you, then your issue would be not similar, and the headphone test recommended by sic0048 or testing a different headphone on the console should be the first step.
Thank you for your reply. We thought it could be a headphone issue but have tried multiple pairs and the issue still persists. Initially I thought our issue was exactly like the OPâs post. But on further testing we are receiving audio through the right headphone but at a very low volume.
To rule out the possibility of a ârouting errorâ lurking somewhere, I would reset the console.
To do this, save your current show on the device and, for added security, also on an USB stick.
Then load the unchangeable A&H standard show âFOHâ and use it to test whether your headphones works now on both sides.
If not, then there is most likely a hardware problem (maybe with the headphone jack, their cabling or the amplifier).
However, if it works with the standard show and no longer works after reloading your show, then we simply need to keep searching for it.
Thank you for your reply. We had a go at doing this. We loaded up the FOH scene and added an input channel that was audio from a computer. We tried it both in stereo as well as mono. The issue of the audio through the right ear being at a very low volume still persists. Weâll look at contacting Allen & Heath support regarding diagnosing the hardware issue. Thank you for all your help.
