I run a stage in a city centre bar/club that has an SQ5. Its a very very noisy (people) bar and we have a small stage for bands. The console has to be stage right, and the PA isnt great.
We have about 30 mins to get a band on, so there’s a very quick load in and only 8 channels of input and 5 of output - almost always going to wired IEMS.
The FOH is easy enough, not great but fine, we have a few scenes that work just fine. Most of the work in the first set is getting mons setup nicely. I usually have time to give everyone a rough mix of everything for showtime, then we tweak in the first song. I pfl each of the output aux in to my headphones or my wired in ears (they arent IEMs just sennheiser buds really) but the noise of the crowd is just so loud I can barely hear anything - i get a really poor quality sound whatever I do.
Is the PFL headphone out a different quality to the aux outputs? The band are eventually happy enough but I’m trying to hear mixes better, I cant tell if quality is poor because of the ambient room sound or the output signal from the headphone out.
I guess I want to PFL to aux really. That would be ideal but I cannot figure that out. I can sort out better headphones then if that sounds better. I’ve seen instructions and videos on PFL bus to Aux but I cant seem to figure it out.
What do you mean by aux outputs?
Appropriately patched XLR outputs?
These aren’t headphone amplifiers, of course, but the appropriately labeled headphone jack is specifically designed for that purpose.
Yes, you can also switch the aux mixes to PFL to listen them pre fader.
To do this, go to Setup - Audio - PAFL and switch ‘Output AFL’ to Off.
I want to press PFL on a mix bus, and that PFL to go to another mix bus, routed to an XLR output that I can use with my IEM. I dont want it to go to the headphone out.
You can’t send the PAFL signal to a mix bus as desired.
The recommended direct patching to an output jack would be possible, you wouldn’t be able to conveniently adjust the level of that signal.
It would be better to use the listen bus, which is parallel to the PAFL and can also be patched under ‘I/O - Outputs - Monitor Out’.
If you would now activate ‘Setup - Mixer Config - Role - Listen Level’, you could even easily adjust the level of this PAFL using the ‘Master Fader’.
