I am on Qu-5 firmware version 1.1.3, and just today encountered a very strange situation with the DeEsser plugin.
I had previously been using an effect in Fx slot 6 using Mix-Return. I had intended to repurpose the slot to be a De-Esser Insert on a single ULX channel, but in a hurry I did not change the type from Mix->Return. The plugin allowed me to set Mix->Return on an IP-Direct out (see attached image).
The result of this was that my input was arriving into the main mix despite being muted, and would remain passing audio even with the channel muted and level down.
I do not see a routing in a block diagram that supports this configuration, and am curious if I have encountered a potential bug.
ULX2 was just a Shure ULXD microphone unit #2, yes the channel name.
I understand how the Fx engine is getting the
What I am having trouble understanding is the return point back to the bus. In Insert mode it’s obvious where it returns, but in Mix->Return mode IP Direct Out for a single channel isn’t a bus, so how is it getting to the LR bus when it isn’t specified as the return destination?
Ah another reply on Facebook and the first reply here helps me uderstand.
It’s taking the signal from the IP Direct Out tap power point and sending it back on the Fx 6 Return.
I was just reading the manual about how an Fx won’t get a return fader option to set on the surface unless it’s in Mix->Return, and the default layer configuration only has FX 1-4. As such, I didn’t have an obvious return control as I didn’t have it added to the surface.
I guess Send->Return is a better way of thinking how this works.
