"Pre Clip" On LR due to transients and ways around it

Hello all,

Im currently mixing on a DLive C1500 and having a small issue with some transients setting off the clip light on my LR bus but my mix is no where actually clipping (Bassiscly like a pre clip warning thing). I have a feeling it’s mostly coming from my snare drum bus and sometimes my drum bus.

Im currently using a 16t comp on both my top and btm running both channels into a bus with a transient controller and a peak limiter comp on the bus.

The drums are just running stock comps on the channel with a multi band on the insert and a Opto comp on the bus.

Iv not really utalised the stage pre Amps and was considering using the pentode to kind of square the transients off on the channels before hitting the group.

Are there any other tips or comps im missing to help reduce this pre clip situation or kind of control my transients a little more

my comp settings for the channels are 2ms attack and 6ms release on the snare comp

would love to hear everyone opinions on this and thanks for your time

The A&H metering will indicate a “clip” before the audio actually reaches the limits of the system and cuts off data. In layman’s terms, this has to do with their metering ballistics and decision when to turn on the clip light (it lower than most other manufactures).

So unless you are actually clipping the tops off your transients (and it will be very apparent in the audio when you start doing this), don’t worry about the lights. There are lots of DLive users that would say the console will actually sound better when you are hitting those clips lights (but before you actually cut off data).

Long story short, don’t worry about limiting/compressing the input if it sounds fine without it.
