Pre Fader FX Sends

Thining about getting an 18T - it looks awesome.

However I can’t get my head around the fact that the FX sends are hard coded to post fader. This is pretty much a deal breaker for me. I do sound for a band and I always mic the whole kit up even if it’s very unlikely I’d send the snare mic to FOH, but I do use it extensively to send to different reverb for certain songs - likewise the toms. Works great on the QU16, the current desk. I feel this is a schoolboy error type of oversight!

Can anyone recommend a similar desk i.e. size/weight/inputs that has pre sends to (4) FX?

Yours pretty gobsmacked,

Ben

Since you have the channels mic’d up whether you use them or not…

Why not just take the channels you don’t plan on using out of the L/R mix and you can set the fader at unity for example and send the effect as normal, then you can still use that fader to mix the effect while mixing the rest of the channels?

Thanks, interesting workaround and worth some further thought.

Initial feeling is that it limits flexibility; if I do want to add the close mic to FOH at some point during the show.

As far as I know, that’s not possible with CQ (currently).

The successor, the QU-5, would be very similar, and there i’s possible to send FX also pre-fader if needed.

Qu-5 looks great, but my intention is to shrink the footprint (and weight) of the PA system. In an ideal world I’d be looking at getting a stage box mixer (I’m using and seriously digging MixingStation) but there might be times when the band might need to do it themselves hence looking into a desk with some form of screen/interface built-in.

If you want to stick with A&H in this regard, the SQ-Rack might be the right choice.

Thanks SQuser really appreciate the input.

Sadly there are budget restraints, and while this looks like a very impressive bit of kit, it might be a little overspec’d for my requirements.

If you could do pre-fade FX sends the CQ18 appears, on paper, to tick all my boxes.

Don’t have to stay A&H, any other suggestions welcome.

Thanks

This often comes also with functional restrains.
I admit, it doesn’t have to be this way, as in your case, compared to other completely unrealistic requests, it would actually be an easy option to implement, one that might even have a chance of being realized.
But you shouldn’t count on it.

I can think of two more workarounds:

  1. Set the FX send for the snare drum as high as possible.
If you now open the snare fader in your main mix just a little bit, you won’t really hear it in the PA, but the FX level might be sufficient.

  2. The other approach requires a separate (possibly stereo) mix (pre fader) that you use for your PA instead of the main mix.
In this case, your actual main mix is only used for adjusting the FX levels and is otherwise ignored.

Both are, of course, inconvenient workarounds, but they are certainly possible and therefore perhaps worth considering.

My bad. I somehow totally glossed over the mixer model.
Think I had just seen so many SQ series posts in the last day, that my brain just presumed.
Thanks for clarifying.

If I’m not misunderstanding you, this request is about the same thing, in which case you may want to upvote that.

Vedeja - yes came across this this afternoon - upvoted it then - thanks for the pointer!

Thanks again, will give these some thoughts!

Very fair point, but it irks me tremendously that the AUX can be pre/post, and whilst I know little about coding it would suggest to my very limited mind that the FX could be as well.

Appreciate the comments - thanks

I just want to point out that this linked feature suggestion means something completely different than an “FX Pre-Fader send” option.
The intention is to keep it post fader, but separately for each of the 7 mixes, as also already indicated in the title.
However, this would mean that @Bengineer still wouldn’t be able to mix only the FX from an input channel without a dry signal to the Main LR, as originally requested.
