Is there any difference between the preamps in the SQ5 and the DX168?

Yes, DX and GX boxes have same preamps as DLive/Avantis, one step up from SQ built in.

Usually use DX168 front centre stage. But last weekend I was doing a carnival with bands on a lorry, and because of the rain blowing in I packed away DX and just ran mic cable direct to SQ.
I thought the vocals didn’t sound as good as normal!
I, however, am 100% sure that a DX168 would have produced exactly the same (vocal) sound for a carnival band on a truck in the rain.

Definitely a difference from how I’ve heard the same peeps before.
You can’t judge from the memory of a completely different (sound reinforcement) situation that the absence of the DX168 noticeably deteriorated the sound.
And it has nothing to do with the quality of the singers or musicians.

I have operated my SQ-6 with and without a DX-168 many times.
The sound quality, no matter the audio system, is definitely superior with the DX-168 when compared to the SQ-6 direct inputs. The addition of a DX-168 is a major upgrade to the SQ line in my opinion. I just recently purchased a new set of stage monitors, when connected directly to the outputs of the SQ-6, the sound quality was OK but not great, then I added the DX-168 and used the outputs from it and the monitors came to life and the frequency response seemed more even across while requiring much less equalization to achieve the desired results. So @SQuser I will have to disagree with your statement, based upon my personal experience and I understand what @daveball was hearing.
Even if you disagree, I still firmly believe that whatever bothered him so much there may have been influenced by many other circumstances, but certainly not by using the local inputs.
So now QU’s now have 96kHz XCVI core, with a DX stage box it should be sonically the same as DLive Avantis and SQ right?
The SQ does not have the same preamps as the Avantis/DLive/DX or GX boxes, but otherwise yes, the sonic quality using a DX/GX box should rival the built in preamps on an Avantis/DLive system.
The rest of the system’s features/functionality will be very different, but the preamp quality should be the same when you use a DX/GX box with the new QU series.
