QU-5 Mixes 7-12 settingnup IEM for stereo pairs

Hi everyone. I am hoping someone can tell me how to pair mix channels 7&8 and 9&10 as stereo pairs. I got 1&2, 3&4, and 5&6 paired for stereo IEM unit’s. So when I push mix 1 both 1&2 light up and are paired stereo. I can’t figure out how to get 7&8, 9&10 do work that same way so we wouldn’t have to go into both channels to adjust the mix that would suck.

As I understand it, mixes 7-12 are always stereo pairs, so you have more stereo mixes than you expected! It’s somewhat confusing you have to pair 1-2 / 3-4 / 5-6, but 7 is already a pair on its own. As is 8, and so on. Think of them as 7L / 7R, sitting under a single mix button.

That isn’t completely true - you have the option to set the Mixes to Stereo or Mono - 1 thru 8 are mono mixes unless you set them as Stereo - then they are pairs 1-2, 3-4, 5-6, and 7-8.

Then 9 through 16 are stereo - 9-10, 11-12 , 13-14, and 15-16 - and those can be set to Groups or Mixes.

I don’t know where you’re getting this. The Qu-5 manual is quite clear on page 23 and 24: mixes 1-6 can be mono or paired up as up to three stereo pairs: 1-2 / 3-4 / 5-6. Another six mixes numbered 7-12 are each stereo. These upper numbers can be configured as mono, but unlike the first six you don’t sacrifice mixes to use these in stereo – and you don’t gain additional mixes in mono. All twelve can be configured as groups if desired. I don’t get where you’re finding anything about mixes numbered above 12, which don’t exist. The four matrices configurable as two stereo matrices are quite different in purpose and capability.

Kate is perfectly correct.
You can have a maximum of 12 mono mixes, or 9 stereo mixes, or something in between. These can either be Aux or Groups in any combination and do not affect the Main LR or matrix count.
When you look at the patching of 7 through 12 mixes, if they are stereo they appear as mix7L and Mix7R etc.

On my Qu-5 mixes 1-6 are mono or grouped stereo. Then 7-12 are stereo mixes that can split to mono. There’s no 13-14, 15-16.

Are you sure you have a Qu-5?

Out of the box 7-8 9-10 11-12 as configured as groups, they would need to be switched to mixes/auxes.

No you are right - I have a QU32.

From the way you described the mix settings that does not sound like a QU 32.

I can see why it’s confusing,
On my QU-5 I can assign mix 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 or 12 as “stereo” even though each one shows ONE output socket and the display doesn’t update to show the adjacent channel being affected.

Also, socket 11 -12 are already assigned as main output 11L and 12R.
Why have Mix 11-12 buttons and menus when 11 and 12 are already assigned?

For example socket 9 (output Mix9) can be set to mono or stereo,
by itself.

10 could also be set that way which shows no effect on the channels around it.
Each one still looks like 1 channel.

Mix 7 can be set to stereo and Mix8 looks the same with it’s own name, sliders and settings.

Conversely, when mix 1-2, 3 -4 or 5-6 get tied together they act like a pair.
Mute 1 will mute 2 also, 3 affects 4 and it evens groups the labels together.
1 becomes 1/2 3 becomes 3/4 (and you can’t get to 4 on it’s own anymore)

The upper ones don’t do that.
Each one remains and acts like a mono channel depending what page you’re on.

Clearly I’m missing something where single output channels are labeled as stereo ?

Remembered to patch the sockets on the console (and stagebox if you have one connected) ?

When you change a mix (7-12) to stereo from mono the left channel remains on the original socket and you have to patch the right channel to some other socket. If you do not have any expansion boxes, or the D Dante option, the QU5 does not have enough physical sockets for all possible outputs! Just as there are not enough physical input sockets for every possible input processing channel. That has always been the case with the smaller models from each range. (With the exception of Qu16 and Qu24), in particular the QuPac and QuSB both had 32 channel input processing but only 16 physical input sockets, and needed expansion boxes to utilise all possible channel count.

I found that while the display doesn’t update on the Audio> Config page where Mix 10 still says Mix10, the IO page did change.

Mix 9 spread into 9L and 9R which used up Mix 9/10.

The confusing part is that Mix 10 still looks normal on the Audio > Config page and even the physical buttons and slider indicated no change.

Mix 10 still had it’s own levels, labels, sliders, PAFL and even the active RTA was running along with compression and other pages but none of those have any effect after 9 is set to stereo. Mix 10 is now the ghost of Mix 10 that looks like 10 but it’s 9R.

Pressing the Mix 9 button selects mix 9 by itself (even though 10 is now tied to it internally)
and the Mix 10 button acts on it’s own as well.
9 and 10 can have their own gain, PEQ, etc but 10 has no effect even though it lets you adjust it.

Even the various motorized faders glide into position if you click on Mix 10 suggesting that Mix 10 is functional - but those have no effect now even though they are still lit up, labeled and moving around.

I didn’t patch or change the routing -it did enough on it’s own depending what page you look at. Don’t believe the Audio > Config page which didn’t update at all.

I also figured out my Mix 11/L and Mix 12/R question.

The default has the main output on 11/L and 12/R but it will let you also configure Mix 11/12 which would be on the same sockets by default.

Mix 11/12 lights up and acts normal with nothing greyed out but it’s actually the main LR mix going to 11/L and 12/R by default.

As a test I configured (moved) the main LR output from socket 11/12 over to XLR out 3/4 and then to 5/6 and those worked. That frees up socket 11/12 so you can use Mix 11/12 in theory.

You could also have several pairs of main stereo outs that way.

It also worked to pull main LR output from the 1/4" TRS ALT output instead of using XLR outputs. TRS is still balanced and the voltage level seemed the same.

That seems to work the same as the main LR XLR out that was on 11/R 12/R originally.

There may be other factors but so far it appears we can send the main LR from the balanced TRS stereo ALT A/B out which then lets us have all 12 Mix outs instead of 10 + 11/L and/12/R.

But you cannot get all 9 stereo mixes, 18 actual signals out of only 12 XLR sockets, you need an expansion box to do so. Your faders are only telling you what is happening inside the mixer! You can patch any 12 (14 if you count Alt A & B) signals to the outside world, that means if all your mixes are stereo, you have only enough sockets for Main L/R plus 6 stereo mixes, so 3 stereo mixes will have to be routed to external stage box, or just USB for recording. The only alternative is to purchase an AB168, AR2412 or the 96kHz DX168 and route the final 3 stereo mixes to sockets on a stage box.

Do not confuse internal mixes with physical sockets, when you made mix 9 stereo (I was wrong in my previous message, the patch for R side is automatic) mix 10 is still fully functional inside the mixer, all the displays and the fader and buttons are telling the truth. It just has no physical connection to the outside world unless you patch it elsewhere.

Yup, I have that working with 6 pairs going to physical sockets passing sound.

I don’t need that many stereo mixes normally but I was trying to determine why one page didn’t update or agree with the other pages. I also figured out how to record Input 1 -2 that wasn’t recorded or routed to USB by default.

As a test I have these routed and they work (even the balance control):

Mix 1-2 > socket 1-2
Mix 3-4 > socket 3-4
Mix 5-6 > socket 5-6 and so forth.
Mix 7-8 > 7-8
Mix 9-10 > 9-10
Mix 11-12 > 11-12

  • ALT A-B = main LR

Now that I located which pages match the physical layout we have stereo on 6 pairs + ALT A-B.
I haven’t investigated where ALT A-B is from but it seems to be patched to main LR.

I may have to look at the Mixing Station program to view the traditional (SQ-7 series) XY patching layout they seem to have dropped on the QU5/6/7 series.

I also have 1 mix that always connects at low/medium volume from input 1 to Mix5 (which annoys guitar player2) no matter how we have it set, off, muted, etc.

There too, a different view via Android or mixing station might find where it’s coming from.
It’s probably a leftover of fat finger week1 we haven’t found yet.

I too miss the SQ type patch page when using the QU5!

FYI I work with both old and new QU mixers, SQ, Avantis and AHM, (oh and my baby CQ18T) so over the last few years have got to understand, through much trial and error as well as reading manuals, a great deal about the whole A&H modern mixer infrastructure, both internal and external.
