I’d like to record from the Qu-Drive connection directly into a laptop hard drive or dedicated partition (without using a DAW). It would allow using the USB I/O for other things, and would open options for network-attached storage potential.

You technically would need to make your computer appear as USB-Device / USB-Stick. For this feature you need special hard- and software like mentioned in the link below.
That’s not easily done. I think that’s almost impossible. Although it would be nice… Network storage like a samba server or a network drive would be nice too. But i don’t know if there’s a good real-time capable network storage hard-/software. Without proper buffering it would lead to a lot of problems.
