Question about the Bus Count

Afternoon All,

I have a question about the Bus count for the SQ series. The specs say that the desk has 36 busses. As far as I can tell that sounds like there are 12 Aux, 12 Group and 12 Mix busses. But if the Aux count decreases the Group count (ie: 4 Grp / 6 Aux), then that seems to me, that they are “sharing a bus line.” The Mix count doesn’t effect the Aux count. So that sounds like 24 busses, not 36.

Can someone clear that up for me?

We’ve discussed this before, but unfortunately the search function here is terrible – at least in my opinion.

There are:

  • 12 Stereo-Mixes = 24
  • 4 Mono-FX = 4
  • 1 Stereo-Main = 2
  • 3 Stereo or up to 6 Mono-Matrices = 6

This makes a total of 36 mixable buses.

The sales literature can be somewhat confusing, and the sales and marketing department always err on the side of optimism…

Yes. You trade off Aux and Groups.

The ability to be able to split the 3 off stereo matrices into 6 off mono matrices has (I think) only just been added to Version 1.6 firmware. I am still holding off upgrading our SQ-7 from 1.5 to 1.6 until the next maintenance release of 1.6 is issued. There are some nice (new) features and some bug fixes, but they have introduced some new bugs which are (as far as I am concerned) a “deal-breakers” for upgrading until they are fixed.

Thanks so much for your replies. I’ve got an SQ-6 which is on V1.6 and I’ve only been using it as an excellent STUDIO inteface. But lately, I’ve been dabbling with the idea of just using the DAW for audio and actually mix on the desk itself. So, I’m trying to clear up anything I don’t understand in order to manage my expectations.
