Hey all,
Looking to do some remote control of an Aux on my SQ for livestream, using MixPad and connecting a DAW type midi control surface. Is that possible? Trying to avoid using a tablet with touchscreen for mixing. So thinking I could run the Mac MixPad app and connect an external fader panel via USB/Midi.
Is this possible?
Unfortunately, the way A&H has implemented MIDI in their systems it’s not robust enough to directly support MIDI device like motorized faders.
However, you can use the third party app Mixing Station which supports MIDI very well. It is relatively trivial to add motorized MIDI faders to the device running Mixing Station and integrate them into the system that way. I have used Mixing Station with various MIDI fader devices without any issues. At different times I used the Behringer X-Touch Controller, Behringer X-Touch Extender, and the Waves Fit Controller. All of those devices are pretty “turn key” solutions with Mixing Station. You can literally plug them in, get the software to connect to them, and start using them. No initial programming is required as those devices come “preprogrammed” with the necessary MIDI commands. That being said, the software is also flexible enough that you can easily change/customize the MIDI functionality of the devices if the preprogrammed functionality isn’t what you need.
You can run Mixing Station on a mobile device or a computer. I have used these various MIDI devices with both options. Yes, you can really plug a MIDI fader bank into a tablet (Android in my case) and have it work with Mixing Station running on the tablet. The same goes for a regular computer. While the physical connection between the MIDI device and the device running MS is normally a hardwired USB cable (although I have used the Behringer devices over a network connection), the connection from the device running MS to the console can be done over Wifi (or a regular network connection) which can make setting this all up even easier.
PS - on the Avantis, DLive, and AHM systems there is an additional choice - the various A&H IP Controllers. However they are not compatible with the SQ console, so that really isn’t an option in this case.

Great feedback. Thank you. Looking into Mixing Station now.
This is very interesting to know, as I love trying things with my various A&H mixers, just for my own education, and I own several midi fader devices. I have never tried using MS as the interface, usually it’s BomeBox. Will have a go next time I get my SQ Rack out.
