I’ve been having the same difficulty for years now (3-4 times per year):
When recording a live show through my SQ5 into Logic pro; the USB connection will randomly drop. If I reset my SQ5 everything is fine again…however, this is not convenient in the middle of a live show I’m usually recording less than 15 tracks. This also happened (for the first time) when playing a YouTube (audio) into my SQ5 - loss of connection. No error messages; it just drops connection. If possible, I would like to continue running at 96K.
Any thoughts or suggestions on what may help maintain a stable connection?
What type of USB cable are you using? Cheap and cheerful or professional?
What power supplies are the SQ5 and the PC on? In particular, are they fed from the same electrical supply with a common safety earth? Thinking here about power glitches and earth loops.
Good call on the cable. Since it works 90% of the time I thought I was ok with it. My cable is good quality - but “it’s been around the block a few times”. Maybe a new one wouldn’t hurt
The power supply of both come through the same power conditioner (Furman) - so I think I’m ok there.
The fix = a good quality usb cable of max 5 meters AND!!! Change your PC Windows Energy plan to a hi performance power plan so that the PC doesn’t save on usb power on that specific output.
Perhaps only partially related, but I had about 30sec dropped out of a multitrack (32ch) recording during the last gig (noticed it because it was the guitar solo). First time ever over 100 recordings, using multiple Samsung T7 2TB drives over the years. 1.6.3, and chkdsk on the drive checked out fine. Cable looked good too. New drive and cable for the next gigs…let’s see. Who knows - maybe I bumped something, considering the headphones jack is next to it.
Yours sounds like a different issue, but recently I’ve had problems with Logic just stopping recording at random over USB. Click record again and off it goes (no restarts necessary). Mostly in the second half of a show when I’ve started to trust it again.
It only seems to happen if I have Logic off the screen (I use the multiple desktops feature on macOS) - if I’m looking straight at it, it never fails.
This is a recent thing.
My MacBook Pro is a 2018 i9 with 32GB RAM and a Radeon Pro Vega 20 GPU, so it’s old but no slouch. When monitoring Logic there’s basically zero CPU or Memory usage shown in the Logic resource meters. Maybe it’s something Apple have done with management of power for apps you can’t see, but you’d think they’d know better for something like Logic.
